Bogot\u00e1 .-<\/strong> Colombian President Gustavo Petro concluded a four-day trip to the United States this Thursday in which, after a year of criticism and disagreements, he resumed the path of dialogue with his counterpart Donald Trump to begin normalizing the bilateral relationship with six months left before the end of his term.<\/p>\n\n\nThe meeting at the White House was preceded by enormous expectation regarding the scope and tone of the meeting, not only because of the personalities of both but also because of the personal situation in which Petro arrived at the meeting, with a special visa because his was canceled last September and included in the list of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), known as ‘Clinton List’, but in the end everyone left satisfied.\n\n“I think the meeting was positive, first simply because it took place without incident, without scandals, without conflict, which in itself is an achievement because with the fights we had seen since President Trump’s possession in his second term, the relationship between the two countries was almost broken,” political analyst Yann Basset, professor at the Faculty of International Studies of the Universidad del Rosario, told EFE.\n\n\n

Proposals without agreements<\/h2>\n\n\nBeyond the forms, which were more friendly than expected, the first meeting of the two leaders focused on the need to maintain cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, a central issue in the bilateral relationship for more than 40 years, and the recovery of Venezuela after the changes produced after the fall of Maduro.\n\nPetro said that in the closed-door meeting, he made several proposals to Trump, such as the one for the armies of Colombia and Venezuela to jointly combat drug traffickers operating in the border regions and gave him a list of capos living abroad, while offering his country’s collaboration in the recovery of Venezuela, especially in the oil sector.\n\nUnderlining his commitment to the fight against drugs to Trump was fundamental for Petro, given that the US president accused him a few months ago of being “a drug trafficking leader” and the Treasury Department included him on the ‘Clinton List’, but beyond good intentions, no concrete agreements were announced.\n\nIn the opinion of the president of the Colombian American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham), Mar\u00eda Claudia Lacouture, “the main value of this meeting is not a specific announcement, but a more strategic result: to recover a framework of trust and predictability.”\n\n“Colombia and the United States share a broad agenda with complex challenges, but also with concrete opportunities that require constant coordination,” said Lacouture.\n\n\n
