{"id":499597,"date":"2025-03-24T12:54:44","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T16:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.net\/en\/uncategorized\/jules-verne-the-pioneering-adventure-writer-of-science-fiction-literature\/"},"modified":"2025-03-24T12:54:44","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T16:54:44","slug":"jules-verne-the-pioneering-adventure-writer-of-science-fiction-literature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deultimominuto.com\/en\/style\/jules-verne-the-pioneering-adventure-writer-of-science-fiction-literature\/","title":{"rendered":"Jules Verne: the pioneering adventure writer of science fiction literature"},"content":{"rendered":"Born on February 8, 1828<\/strong> under the name Jules Gabriel Verne<\/strong> and known in Spanish-speaking countries as Julio Verne<\/strong>, he was a French writer, playwright, and poet, famous for his adventure novels and for his profound influence on the literary genre of science fiction.<\/strong>\n\nHe was the eldest of five children (Julio, Paul, Anne, Mathilde and Marie) born to the marriage of Pierre Verne, who came from a family linked to jurisprudence (his grandfather was notary advisor to Louis XV and president of the Nantes Bar Association), and Sophie Verne, maiden name Allotte de la Fu\u00ffe, belonging to a family of sailors and shipowners.\n\nHe is one of the most important writers in France and all of Europe <\/strong>thanks to the obvious influence of his books on avant-garde literature and surrealism, and since 1979 he has been the second most translated author in the world, after Agatha Christie.\n\nAccording to the data, the interest in writing comes when a teacher tells him anecdotes about her sailor husband. Verne was interested in poetry and science. He read and collected scientific articles<\/strong>, demonstrating an almost obsessive curiosity that would last a lifetime.\n\nIn 1849, he obtained his law degree<\/strong> and his father allowed him to stay in Paris. He continued writing theater and opera librettos (from 1848 to 1863). His father wanted him to dedicate himself to his career in law, but he was not interested in that work and his father, angry with him, stopped funding him. In addition, he spent all his savings on books, while spending long hours in the libraries of Paris wanting to know everything.\n\nIn 1850, at the age of twenty-two, he wrote a light comedy, Las pajas rotas<\/strong><\/em>, which he managed to premiere in Paris thanks to Dumas, with modest success. The following year he published in the illustrated magazine El museo de las Familias<\/em><\/strong> two stories: \u00abMart\u00edn Paz\u00bb (a fantasy inspired by the paintings of the Peruvian artist Ignacio Merino) and \u00abUn drama en M\u00e9xico\u00bb (a historical tale inspired by the Viaje al equinoccio americano<\/em>, by the German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt) and several plays, librettos for fashionable operettas and short novels.\n\n\n

In May 1856, he meets the woman who will become his future wife, a woman named Honorine Hebe du Fraysse de Viane,<\/strong> who is the widow of Morel and mother of two daughters (Valentine and Suzanne). He marries (betraying the cause of his misogynistic group of friends The Eleven Without a Woman<\/em>) Honorine on January 10, 1857, believing that he will find the emotional stability he lacks. <\/p>\n\n\nMarriage, instead of helping him, quickly exasperates him. Every time the opportunity arises, he escapes his duties as a spouse. Four years after getting married, Julio plans a trip, which would later translate into leaving Honorine alone while she gave birth to the only child of the marriage, Michel Verne<\/strong>.\n\nYour son was very rebellious; he was confined to a mental asylum at Julio’s request<\/strong>. After a few years Michel left, but he always resented that his father had interned him. Michel had already been in a reformatory as a child.\n\n\n

Verne came to own up to three boats: the\u00a0Saint Michel<\/em>, the\u00a0Saint Michel II<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0Saint Michel III<\/em>. Between 1868 and 1886 he made many voyages by sea, and as he sailed he got to know various cities.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Important Works by Verne<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nAmong his most popular books are Journey to the Center of the Earth<\/em>\u00a0(1864)<\/strong>, From the Earth to the Moon\u00a0(1865)<\/em>,\u00a0Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea<\/em>\u00a0(1870)<\/strong>,\u00a0Around the World in Eighty Days<\/em>\u00a0(1873) <\/strong>and\u00a0The Mysterious Island<\/em>\u00a0(1874)<\/strong>.\n\nVerne’s works have been brought to the cinema on numerous occasions. The first cinematographic adaptation of *A Trip to the Moon* was made by the pioneering French filmmaker Georges M\u00e9li\u00e8s. In 1892 he was distinguished with the Legion of Honor.\n\n\n

Last Years of Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nWhen Verne was fifty-eight years old, in March 1886, a tragic event took place: while walking back to his house, his nephew Gaston, twenty-five years old, with whom he maintained a cordial relationship, shot him with a revolver without clear motivations. The first bullet missed, but the second wounded him in the left leg, causing a limp from which he did not recover. The incident was concealed by the press and Gaston spent the rest of his life interned in a mental asylum.\n\n\n

On March 24, 1905,<\/strong> ill with\u00a0diabetes\u00a0for years, Verne died in his home, <\/strong>at 44 Longueville Boulevard<\/strong> (currently Jules Verne Boulevard). He was buried in the La Madeleine cemetery, located northwest of\u00a0Amiens, in whose tomb Verne is depicted emerging from the sepulcher, a work by the sculptor\u00a0Albert Roze.<\/p>\n\n\nHis son Michel Verne supervised the publication of his last novels The Invasion of the Sea<\/strong><\/em> and The Lighthouse at the End of the World<\/strong><\/em>.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
