In the tragedy, four people initially died, including the driver, while 15 remain hospitalized, 14 with life-threatening risks.\n\nThe state agency has released the information through a report in which it stated that the people who remain hospitalized, both in the public network and in the private health network, maintain their condition of severity without variations.\n\nThe mayor of Renca, Claudio Castro, has reported that, among the fatalities announced this Saturday, there is a resident of his municipality, who is the second person in the sector to lose their life in the explosion, for which he has decreed three days of communal mourning.\n\n\n

The accident caused a crack in the gas cylinder and caused an explosion that reached the people who were in the area and, in addition, set fire to about 50 vehicles and a train.\n\nThe emergency, which occurred very close to the center of Santiago, generated a gigantic smoke cloud that could be seen from different points in the city. The fire was extinguished after nine hours of work by officials belonging to 25 fire companies.\n\nThe initial hypothesis of prosecutor Macarena Ca\u00f1as, who is in charge of the investigation, is that the driver may have lost control of the truck, probably due to speeding, which generated “a chain collision with a second larger vehicle.” Then, she explained, “this cloud-like explosion occurred due to the liquefied gas and petroleum content it carried inside” the truck.\n\nThe company Gasco issued a public statement this Saturday in which it stated that the situation has “deeply” impacted it. “As a company, we reiterate our regret and send our condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones, as well as to those who have suffered serious injuries,” it stated. “We regret the death of two new victims confirmed this noon by the authorities.
