The Dominican Government, through the Ministries of Energy and Mines and Foreign Affairs (Mirex), announced that it will hold the First International Forum on Rare Earths, a strategic initiative that seeks to position the country in the geopolitical conversation about supply chains of these elements, attract financing, technical allies, among other objectives.<\/p>\n
When heading a meeting with the press, alongside the executive vice president of the Dominican Mining Company (Emidom), Miguel \u00c1ngel D\u00edaz, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos, indicated that the meeting will be held on May 27 at the Convention Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n
He specified that, in addition to strengthening the country’s positioning in the field of critical minerals, the forum aims to promote integration into global value chains, promote high-level technical and strategic dialogue, attract foreign investment and technical allies for later phases of the exploration project, consolidate alliances with multilateral organizations and actors in the mining sector, and position the Ministry of Energy and Mines as a promoter of responsible mining.<\/p>\n
Santos offered context on the Dominican Republic’s positioning regarding critical minerals, recalling the country’s participation in the Ministerial Meeting on Critical Minerals, on February 4 in Washington, through his person and his counterpart at Mirex, Roberto \u00c1lvarez, convened by the United States Department of State and attended by representatives from 50 countries.<\/p>\n
In that scenario, the country was projected as a relevant actor in the global strategy of supply chain diversification. Similarly, the minister said that the progress of the exploration project in the \u00c1vila Mining Fiscal Reserve (RFMA), located in the province of Pedernales, was presented.<\/p>\n
He announced that for these purposes, the Dominican Republic will invite leading national and international experts in the field, representatives from the different areas involved in the process, and academia, as a fundamental actor in technical terms.<\/p>\n
“The First International Forum on Rare Earths must capitalize on this momentum and convert diplomatic interest into concrete commitments for investment, technical cooperation, and technology transfer,” Santos emphasized regarding the relevance of the event.<\/p>\n
He also said that with the creation of Emidom, through decree 453-24, as a state-owned company with sole capital for the exploration and exploitation of strategic resources, the institutional framework of the initiative in favor of the State is strengthened.<\/p>\n
During the meeting with the press representatives, the Minister of Energy and Mines also addressed how progress has been made in the rare earth exploitation process, from the year 2024 to date, with geological mapping, surveys, samples collected, preliminary metallurgical studies, among other technical procedures.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the head of Emidom pointed out that after the forum, on May 28, international experts and representatives of different institutions in the sector who will participate in the event will visit the site, where they can express their concerns and assessments of the project. D\u00edaz considered that the visit represents a great opportunity and will be very useful for the advancement of the initiative.<\/p>\n
In attendance were, in addition, the Vice Minister of the Presidency and advisor to Emidom; Roger Pujols; the Vice Minister of Planning and Public Investment, representing the Minister of Finance, Mart\u00edn Francos; the Vice Minister for Dominican Communities Abroad of Mirex, Cel\u00edn\u00e9s Toribio; the General Director of Mining, Rolando Mu\u00f1oz; the Executive Director of the National Geological Service, Edwin Garc\u00eda and the president of the Patrimonial Fund of Reformed Companies, Jos\u00e9 Florentino.<\/p>\n
