Gloria Reyes<\/strong>, Minister of Women, put into perspective the progress made in terms of female political participation with data extracted from the elections held in 2024, which cite that 9,167 women ran for popular election positions<\/strong>, equivalent to 43% of the candidacies<\/strong>; while 1,226 were elected, occupying nearly 49% of the positions<\/strong>. The figure takes on a historical significance if we remember that just 84 years ago Dominicans exercised the right to vote for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\nReyes underscored that the eradication of gender violence continues to be a national priority, as it is one of the main scourges affecting Dominican women. Faced with this reality, he pointed out that the State maintains its commitment to strengthen public policies aimed at equality, expand protection systems and promote cultural changes that allow overcoming unequal power relations.\n\n\n

“Each generation has a task with democracy and ours is to ensure that equality ceases to be an aspiration to become a reality,” he expressed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\nOutstanding Women in this 41st Edition of the Dominican Women’s Merit Medal<\/strong>\n\nOutstanding women were recognized for their contributions in various fields of national life. Among the awardees are Alba Carolina V\u00e1squez Almonte, in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics<\/strong>; Cleotilde Margarita Cordero Guerrero<\/strong>, in Communication and Journalism<\/strong>; Yudelina Mej\u00eda Peguero<\/strong>, in Sports<\/strong>; and Ertuania Jorge Menc\u00eda<\/strong>, as Outstanding Dominican Abroad<\/strong>.\n\nSimilarly, Ginette Bournigal<\/strong> was distinguished in Political Participation<\/strong>; Yildalina Noem\u00ed Tatem Brache<\/strong>, in Promotion of Gender Equality<\/strong>; Rosanna Guillermina Santana Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>, in Promotion of Inclusion<\/strong>; Carmen Cristina De Aza Mej\u00eda<\/strong>, in the Education Sector<\/strong>; and Luisa Marisela Valdez Aguasvivas<\/strong>, in the Business Sector<\/strong>.\n\nAlso received the state distinction Mar\u00eda Josefina Mej\u00eda de Sosa<\/strong>, in the Financial Sector<\/strong>; Eunisis V\u00e1squez Acosta<\/strong>, in the Judicial Sector<\/strong>; Elsa Johanne S\u00e1nchez Ram\u00edrez<\/strong>, in the Rural Sector<\/strong>; Nalini Campillo Vilorio<\/strong>, Health Sector<\/strong>; Angie Shakira Mart\u00ednez Tejera, Diplomatic Service<\/strong>; and Mar\u00eda Susana de Jes\u00fas Gautreau de Windt<\/strong>, Public Service<\/strong>.\n\nAlso recognized were Camila Ramona D\u00edaz Cuello<\/strong>, in Union and Trade Union Career<\/strong>; Dominga Zorrilla Dom\u00ednguez<\/strong>, in Professional Career<\/strong>; Aldaleny Correa Liranzo<\/strong>, Religious Career<\/strong>; Arisleida Jos\u00e9 Ortega<\/strong>, Social and Community Career<\/strong>; M\u00e9rida Franchesca Carina Noble Ure\u00f1a<\/strong>, in the Cultural and Artistic Field<\/strong>; and Ana Lidia Ger\u00f3nimo F\u00e9lix de Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong>, in the Military or Police Field<\/strong>.\n\nDuring the ceremony, a posthumous recognition was also granted to the feminist and human rights defender, Zobeyda Alejandrina Cepeda Pe\u00f1a<\/strong>, as well as special recognitions to Enerolisa N\u00fa\u00f1ez <\/strong>(posthumous), Peggy Cabral<\/strong>, Amanda Castillo Levison<\/strong>, Nuria Sallent Surribas <\/strong>and Carmen Enicia Chevalier Caraballo<\/strong>, for their contributions to the promotion of women’s rights and their impact in different areas of national life.\n\nThe activity served as a stage to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Minerva Mirabal, a symbol of resistance to the iron dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo and a historical reference in the fight for freedom. Her legacy was presented as a current inspiration for the new generations of Dominicans who continue to pave the way in the public, social, and economic life of the country.\n\nThe day concluded with the presentation of a moving recognition to Minerva Mirabal, which was received by Minou Tav\u00e1rez Miraval.\n\nThe distinction endorsed by decree 30-13 is awarded each year within the framework of the March 8th commemorations, and on this occasion, it registered a wide participation, with 250 women nominated in 22 categories<\/strong>, reflecting the diversity of female leadership that contributes to the social, economic, cultural, and community development of the Dominican Republic.\n\n\n
