Violence during the social unrest in Chile<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nThe outbreak, which resulted in two failed constituent processes, combined peaceful and massive marches with episodes of excessive violence, looting, and destruction of public furniture, which left about thirty dead and thousands injured, including more than 450 victims of eye trauma, according to recent data from the Prosecutor’s Office.\n\nThe UN and various human rights organizations accused the security forces of human rights violations.\n\n“I understand that someone who feels like a victim of a situation like that finds it very difficult to overcome, but let’s look at what has happened in other countries, let’s look at our history and we must start by forgiving,” indicated Kast, who was sworn in on Wednesday and became the first far-right leader and defender of Augusto Pinochet’s regime since the return to democracy.\n\nKast, who has always described the marches as a “criminal outburst”, assured in his campaign that he would never pardon “terrorists and criminals” and strongly criticized the controversial pardons granted by his predecessor, the progressive Gabriel Boric, to a dozen imprisoned protesters.\n\n\n

A cascade of criticisms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nThe possibility that Kast is now the one to pardon the security forces has generated a cascade of criticism in the left-wing and center-left opposition.\n\nIndependent left-wing Senator Fabiola Campillai, a recognized victim of police repression in the 2019 demonstrations, demanded that Kast “respect the decisions of the courts.”\n\n“Fulfilling security functions doesn’t mean shooting someone in the face. That’s a crime and justice has ruled as such. President, let justice be done because that is also providing security,” indicated Campillai, who went blind at 38 due to the impact of a tear gas bomb thrown by a police officer while she was on her way to work amid the protests.\n\nLeft-wing deputy Gustavo Gatica, another emblematic victim of police brutality, also attacked the far-right and recalled a bill being discussed in Parliament to grant house arrest to elderly or sick prisoners, which could benefit those primarily responsible for crimes against humanity perpetrated during the dictatorship.\n\n\u00abWhat is the right’s eagerness to want to release criminals from prison?
