San Jos\u00e9.-<\/strong> The Costa Rican government announced this Monday the signing of a non-binding migration cooperation agreement with the United States, which allows the U.S. to propose the transfer of foreign persons, who are not U.S. citizens, to Costa Rica, which may accept or reject each case independently.<\/p>\n\n\nCosta Rican President Rodrigo Chaves signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United States, focused on the joint management of migratory flows, within the framework of the visit of the special envoy of the Americas Shield, Kristi Noem, indicated the Presidential House in a statement.\n\n“It’s a collaboration protocol between Costa Rica and the United States, so that Costa Rica once again acts as an ally of the United States in the things that matter in the hemisphere. It is a voluntary agreement, we could reject anyone, not accept specific nationalities, but collaborate within the framework of the human rights of our country,” Chaves affirmed.\n\n\n

How does the agreement work in practice?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nThus, once in national territory, the people sent from the U.S. will be attended to under Costa Rican immigration law, receiving a temporary legal status while their situation is defined. According to the Government of Costa Rica, the agreement guarantees respect for human rights, including protection against return to countries where people may face danger or persecution.\n\n“We are very proud to have partners like the president and Costa Rica, who work with us to ensure that people who are in our country illegally have the opportunity to return to their countries of origin,” said Noem.\n\nThe Government indicated that it is estimated that up to 25 people could be transferred per week, although the figure could be adjusted as determined by the country.\n\nThe meeting between Chaves and Noem was private and without press access. In addition, the president-elect, Laura Fern\u00e1ndez, participated in the meeting, as can be seen in the images sent by Casa Presidencial.\n\n\n
