A Priority Objective for Petro<\/h3>\n\n\nAccording to the president, who will end his term on August 7th, those are “two more chapters that the Constitution needs” and “this is the objective for this year before it ends, not for the next century.”\n\n“All these reforms that guarantee the fundamental rights that the 91 Constitution ordered (…) must be approved, it is the order of the people,” he stated.\n\n\n

Controversial Proposal<\/h3>\n\n\nPetro has been promoting the idea of a constituent assembly since March 15, 2024, when in a speech in Cali, the main city in the southwest of the country, he proposed it as an alternative for the transformation of Colombia in the face of the stagnation of his reforms in Congress.\n\nPetro’s proposal has been rejected by various parties and sectors that consider that call unnecessary because the current Constitution is one of the most modern on the continent, but even so, a committee of allies of the Government began collecting signatures last February for that purpose.\n\nThe right-wing opposition also claims that what Petro seeks with the call for a constituent assembly is to reintroduce presidential re-election, suppressed in 2015, to run again for the position in 2030.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
