Every May 3rd, World Press Freedom Day<\/strong> is commemorated, a date proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, to underscore the fundamental role of free journalism in building democratic societies. This commemoration also serves to assess the global state of press freedom<\/strong>, defend the media against attacks on their independence, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their work.<\/p>\n\n\nThe choice of this date responds to the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration<\/strong>, adopted in 1991 by African journalists during a UNESCO seminar in Namibia. This document lays the foundations for a free, independent and pluralistic press, understood as one that operates without interference from political or economic power<\/strong>, which constitutes an essential element for democracy.\n\n\n

What is freedom of the press?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nThe freedom of the press<\/strong> is the right of the media to investigate, report, and express opinions without being victims of censorship, intimidation, or coercion. It also implies the possibility of creating autonomous and diverse media, constitutionally protected in many democracies, as an expression of freedom of expression.\n\nIn contexts where the harassment of journalists, media concentration, or disinformation threaten the truth, defending this right becomes more urgent than ever.\n\n\n

Commitment and global action<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\nIn this day, concrete actions are promoted to:\n\n\n

  • Protect journalists<\/strong> from threats and attacks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Strengthen the editorial independence<\/strong> of the media.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Raise awareness<\/strong> about the value of information plurality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Demand legal guarantees<\/strong> that support the free exercise of journalism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\nGovernments, institutions, NGOs and citizens are called upon to renew their commitment to the defense of this fundamental human right. A free press not only informs: “forms citizenship, scrutinizes power and defends the truth”.\n\n\n
