San Juan.- <\/em><\/strong>Amidst the massive peaceful march against mining exploitation in the province, Natural Sciences professor Juan Francisco de Le\u00f3n Cuevas joined the voices rejecting these projects, highlighting <\/a>the agricultural and water importance of the region.<\/p>\n\n\nDuring his intervention, the educator described San Juan as a key axis for national production.\n\n\n

Read more: San Juan marches this Sunday against mining exploitation in defense of water<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n“San Juan is the breadbasket of the south, where a large part of the grains consumed by the country are produced and a wide variety of products such as beans, pigeon peas, chickpeas, plantains and onions,” he expressed, also highlighting the province’s role in agricultural exports.\n\nThe teacher warned about the environmental risks that, in his opinion, the mining activity in the area would entail, especially in the Central Mountain Range, which he described as “the mother of all the country’s waters.” In that sense, he mentioned possible effects on important water sources such as the Yaque del Norte and Yaque del Sur rivers.\n\nLikewise, he referred to key infrastructures for agricultural production, such as the Sabaneta Dam, Palomino Dam, and Sabana Yegua Dam, noting that these have contributed to the economic development of the southern region.\n\nWhen asked about his position on mining, he was emphatic: “Never in my life. That’s why the rivers go,” he stated.\n\nThe professor also addressed a message to President Luis Abinader, whom he urged to review his position on the matter.\n\n“If you wanted a legacy in your history as a government, you are taking it away with this decision,” he expressed, also indicating that sectors of the ruling party in San Juan do not support mining exploitation in the area.\n\nThe educator’s participation is added to that of various social, community, and professional sectors that have attended the march to express their rejection of mining and defend the water resources and agricultural production of the province.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
