Since last Sunday, May 3rd, the Drivers and Transportation Employees Union (SICHOEM) increased the fare from RD$275 to RD$325 on the La Romana\u2013Santo Domingo route, representing an increase of RD$50. Likewise, the La Romana\u2013San Pedro de Macor\u00eds route went from RD$125 to RD$150, equivalent to an increase of RD$25.<\/p>\n\n\nIn addition to these increases, there is the increase applied by ASODEMIPUR on the urban route between the head municipality of La Romana and the municipality of Villa Hermosa, whose fare went from RD$45 to RD$50.\n\nThe situation has generated discomfort among workers, students, and citizens who depend daily on public transport to get to their workplaces, universities, and other essential activities.\n\nLast Monday, the Dominican government announced an increase of RD$800 million to the subsidy for fuel for cargo and passenger transporters, during a meeting chaired by President Luis Abinader at the National Palace along with representatives of the transport sector.\n\nThe Minister of Industry, Commerce and SMEs, Eduardo Sanz Lovat\u00f3n, stated that the measure seeks to “continue to ensure that there is no increase in the cost of transportation in the coming days” and mitigate the impact of the international rise in oil on the population.\n\nLikewise, transport leaders present at the meeting, including representatives from CONATRA, CNTU and other federations, publicly ruled out immediate increases in the price of tickets while talks with the Government continue.\n\nHowever, citizens consider it contradictory that just days after the official announcement, increases are already being applied on different routes, directly affecting the pockets of thousands of Dominican families.\n\n“If the Government is increasing subsidies to prevent fares from rising, then someone has to explain why users are paying more,” expressed passengers consulted.\n\nUsers also demanded greater oversight of the destination of subsidies granted to the transportation sector and asked the authorities to ensure that these resources actually translate into relief for the population.\n\n“The cost of living continues to rise and transportation is an unavoidable daily expense.
