His condition has deteriorated significantly and he is no longer receiving medical treatment, only basic care from his grandmother.

“To physical pain is added the emotional anguish of the absence of their parents and the helplessness of not being with them,” Victoria had said to local media.

Kevin’s story began last Christmas, when he felt ill and was later diagnosed with advanced, terminal colon cancer.

Knowing he would be living his last days, Kevin boarded a flight back to Mexico to say goodbye to his parents, but they were no longer in Durango, but in a detention center.

Aware of the bad news, Norma and Isidoro González attempted to illegally cross the border in a desperate attempt to see their son in the U.S., because due to prior history of a deportation in 2011, they did not obtain humanitarian or tourist visas to enter the country.

According to his family, no request worked. Neither the medical documents from the University of Chicago Hospital, nor the terminal diagnosis, managed to convince the US authorities to grant them a humanitarian visa.

The Right to Say Goodbye

So far, the only contact with Kevin has been through his mother, who managed to speak with him via a video call from the detention center.

Arizona Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva had publicly requested today the immediate release of the parents, pointing out that it is a matter of “human decency.”

Consul Torres Mendívil said that Chicago worked with the Mexican consulate in Tucson to coordinate the legal defense of the parents and future assistance to facilitate repatriation once released.

You can also read:

His colleague Fernando Sánchez, consul of Mexico in Tucson, told local media that charges for “undocumented re-entry” would be presented at a hearing, and it would be decided whether they would face criminal charges or simply be repatriated.

The acting magistrate opted for expedited repatriation, considering that keeping the parents detained no longer served a public safety interest, and it did affect the right of a U.S. citizen to say goodbye to their family before dying.

“I want to see my parents even if it’s for the last time,” said Kevin in a television interview.

Miami.- A U.S. immigration judge ordered the release on Thursday of the parents of a young American who asked to see them before he died due to suffering from cancer, the Mexican consulate in Chicago informed EFE.
