VATICAN CITY. \u2013 Pope Leo XIV finally received a jersey autographed by former slugger Paul Konerko, one of the great historical figures of the Chicago White Sox and champion of the 2005 World Series.<\/p>\n
Robert Prevost, the new pontiff’s birth name and a recognized White Sox fan, posed in the Vatican holding the jersey signed by Konerko, who was one of the most emblematic players of the franchise during his 16 seasons on the Chicago team.<\/p>\n
The former first baseman sent the gift in July of last year, shortly after the Pope’s sporting affinity became known, the first pontiff born in the United States and originally from the South Side of Chicago, an area historically linked to the White Sox.<\/p>\n
The story also left a curious coincidence: Konerko used the number 14 for most of his career with Chicago, while Prevost became the 14th pope to adopt the name Leo.<\/p>\n
The pontiff’s connection with the organization is widely known. During the 2005 World Series, he was captured by the cameras celebrating one of the games of the title won by Chicago against the Houston Astros.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, in June 2025, he publicly appeared in the Vatican wearing a White Sox cap, a gesture that further strengthened the bond with the franchise.<\/p>\n
