BERLIN. \u2013 Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer leads Germany’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, marking his return to the national team at the age of 40.<\/p>\n
Coach Julian Nagelsmann confirmed this Thursday the inclusion of the historic FC Bayern Munich goalkeeper, after weeks of speculation about his possible return.<\/p>\n
“We decided after many discussions that the three best goalkeepers in Germany should be at the World Cup. That’s why we spoke with Manuel to find out if he was willing to return,” explained Nagelsmann during the presentation of the list.<\/p>\n
The coach also announced that Neuer will be the team’s starting goalkeeper at the World Cup.<\/p>\n
The call-up of the 2014 world champion generated debate due to the good performance of Oliver Baumann, who had been a starter throughout the qualifying rounds. The third goalkeeper included is Alexander N\u00fcbel, while the young Jonas Urbig will accompany the group to participate in the training sessions.<\/p>\n
Among those called up are usual figures such as Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, as well as some new faces like attacking midfielder Lennart Karl and the return of midfielder Nadiem Amiri.<\/p>\n
Nagelsmann also referred to Musiala’s physical condition, who recently returned after a serious injury.<\/p>\n
“We hope he returns to being the same. Even at 80 percent, Jamal is still one of the best players on the planet,” said the coach.<\/p>\n
In defense, Germany maintains the base used during the qualifiers, with Kimmich, Jonathan Tah, Nico Schlotterbeck, and David Raum. Antonio R\u00fcdiger is also included, although he would initially have a secondary role.<\/p>\n
