Santo Domingo.\u2013<\/strong> Representatives from the countries that make up the Central American Integration System<\/strong> <\/a>(SICA) have been participating since this Monday in a regional workshop aimed at strengthening regulatory capacities and advancing toward a joint mechanism for the evaluation of medicines and vaccines in Central America<\/strong> and the Dominican Republic.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activity, which takes place from June 1 to 3 in the country, brings together specialists and health authorities to exchange experiences on the application of technical tools aimed at the evaluation of biotechnological and biosimilar medicines, considered fundamental to expand access to high-complexity treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the opening of the meeting, the Minister of Public Health and president pro tempore of the Council of Health Ministers of Central America and the Dominican Republic (COMISCA), V\u00edctor Atallah, highlighted the importance of regional cooperation to ensure that the population has timely access to safe, effective, and quality medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atallah pointed out that biosimilar medicines represent an opportunity to expand access to innovative treatments, although he acknowledged the need to strengthen public information to combat misconceptions about these products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, the executive secretary of COMISCA, Jos\u00e9 Ren\u00e1n De Le\u00f3n, stated that the creation of a regional joint evaluation mechanism will allow for the optimization of resources, the reduction of duplication, and the streamlining of regulatory processes without affecting the scientific rigor necessary to protect the health of citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, the General Director of Medicines, Food and Health Products (DIGEMAPS), Marcos Balaguer Jerez, highlighted that cooperation between the region’s regulatory bodies constitutes a key step towards more efficient and harmonized health regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop is supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the State Foundation for Health, Childhood and Social Welfare (FCSAI), the Spain-SICA Fund, and experts from the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS), who guide participants through practical technical evaluation exercises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the working sessions, representatives of national regulatory authorities will share best practices, identify training needs, and define actions to strengthen the region’s institutional capacities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is part of the efforts promoted by COMISCA to consolidate a Regional Mechanism for the Joint Evaluation of Medicines and Vaccines, considered a strategic step to strengthen health security, expand equitable access to innovative treatments, and advance the creation of the future Central American Health Regulation Agency (ACRS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authorities highlighted that this process will contribute to improving the response of health systems to complex diseases and will strengthen regional integration in health matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
