Santo Domingo.<\/strong> The demolition of La Victoria prison will begin during the last week of June, as part of the definitive closure process of one of the oldest and most questioned penitentiary facilities in the country, reported the Director General of Penitentiary and Correctional Services, Roberto Santana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official explained that the dismantling of the prison will feature the symbolic participation of survivors and relatives of people who lost their lives at the facility, including descendants of former inmates and victims of the conditions that prevailed for decades in the prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santana indicated that the work will begin in the areas that have already been vacated and will progressively extend until the total demolition of the complex is completed before the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he revealed that the Government is evaluating the development of an educational city on the land currently occupied by La Victoria. The project includes universities, technical institutes, sports facilities, government offices, judicial offices, and a theme park, with the capacity to benefit about 40,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Victoria prison was built in 1952 to house 1,700 inmates, but over the years it came to hold more than 9,300 prisoners, a situation that caused serious levels of overcrowding and deterioration of living conditions within the penitentiary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The venue was also the scene of two fires that occurred in March 2024. The first left 13 dead and several injured, while a second incident further worsened the state of the facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, nearly 5,000 inmates remain at La Victoria. Authorities reported that they will be gradually transferred to the Las Parras Correctional and Rehabilitation Center, in groups of approximately 400 inmates, until the total relocation of the prison population is complete.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
