Couples going through this situation often do so in silence, trapped by the weight of prejudices that associate the inability to conceive with failure or weakness. However, the World Health Organization recognizes infertility as a disease that affects approximately one in every six couples of reproductive age.

The medical concept is clear: infertility is considered when a pregnancy is not achieved after one year of regular sexual intercourse without contraceptive methods, or when there is difficulty in carrying a pregnancy to term. Although its diagnosis can be devastating for those who dream of starting a family, there are multiple treatments capable of reversing or overcoming the causes, allowing many people to finally have a healthy baby.

Beyond biology: an emotional battle

Scientific advances in reproductive medicine have opened up new possibilities for those facing fertility issues. However, the available treatments often involve a difficult journey: constant visits to specialized clinics, expensive procedures, hormonal alterations, and, above all, an emotional rollercoaster that can profoundly affect self-esteem and the couple’s relationship.

In many cases, the psychological impact of infertility can be as strong as the diagnosis itself. Couples often experience isolation, sadness, frustration, and even feelings of guilt. Added to this is social pressure, especially towards women, who are often singled out as the main ones responsible for the problem, although the causes can occur indistinctly in both sexes.

Diverse causes, the same challenge

In the case of women, infertility can be due to conditions such as endometriosis —a disease in which uterine tissue grows outside the uterus—, ovulation problems, low egg quality, uterine fibroids, or blocked fallopian tubes. But not everything comes down to the female reproductive system.

In men, the most common causes include a low sperm count or motility, abnormalities in their shape, hormonal problems, ejaculation disorders, or even semen that is too thick, which prevents sperm from reaching the egg.

Although many people associate infertility exclusively with age, the truth is that it can appear for multiple reasons, some of which are avoidable or controllable with a healthy lifestyle.

What we can do: improve conditions

Faced with this scenario, there are measures that can contribute to optimizing fertility, both in men and women. They do not guarantee a pregnancy, but they do help create more favorable conditions to achieve it:

Adopt a balanced diet, rich in antioxidants, vitamins, folic acid, and omega-3, which promotes ovarian and sperm quality.

Maintain a healthy weight, as both obesity and being underweight negatively affect reproductive functions.

Avoid tobacco and reduce alcohol consumption, two factors that have been shown to have a direct impact on fertility.

Engage in moderate physical exercise, which not only combats overweight but also reduces stress levels.

Take care of your mental health, which is key in this process. Chronic stress can alter hormonal cycles and make conception difficult. Activities such as meditation, yoga, and quiet walks as a couple can make a difference.

Consult a specialist in time. It is not about being alarmed, but about acting with information. A fertility study does not always reveal a problem, but it can offer keys to improve the odds.

Breaking the silence: a collective task

World Fertility Day is not just a date to talk about medicine. It is also an opportunity to generate empathy, to listen to those going through this journey without judgment, and to understand that infertility should not be experienced in secret or with shame.

In a world where social media constantly displays pregnancies, births, and family celebrations, many people struggling to conceive feel alone. That is why it is so important for society, medical institutions, the media, and public policies to come together to create a more humane environment, where talking about fertility —or the lack thereof— is not a taboo.

Fertility is not just a biological matter. It is a vital part of reproductive health, life projects, and the dignity of millions of people. And this June 4th, the best gesture we can make is to face this reality head-on, with respect, compassion, and a will for change.

Every June 4th, World Fertility Day is commemorated, a date that invites us to face a reality that affects more and more people around the world: the difficulty of conceiving.
