Security agencies from the \u201cFive Eyes\u201d alliance, which includes the United States and the United Kingdom, warned this Wednesday that Chinese spies are aggressively using online job platforms to recruit individuals with access to sensitive information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cSafeguarding Our Secrets\u201d bulletin points out that China’s military intelligence services were using a wide variety of professional networks and online recruitment services to target individuals in government, the armed forces, or anyone else with access to classified information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cChinese military intelligence services ultimately seek to obtain privileged military, political, and economic intelligence that could give China a strategic and tactical advantage over the Five Eyes,\u201d said the domestic security agencies of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Although there had already been similar warnings from individual countries, the joint bulletin was described as unprecedented. Beijing has repeatedly rejected these espionage accusations and has labeled them as \u201cpure fabrication and malicious slander.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the bulletin, the Five Eyes agencies said that Chinese spies were especially focusing on people specializing in defense, foreign affairs, and intelligence, as well as military personnel, including those stationed in the Indo-Pacific region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalists, think tank employees, and individuals with peripheral access to government data were also at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document points out that the spies resorted to \u201can aggressive online recruitment strategy\u201d and that they then pressured the selected candidates to hand over confidential information \u201cfor unidentified clients associated with the Chinese government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the bulletin, those who were recruited could receive payments ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per report, and were offered more money for increasingly sensitive information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States had already warned about the use of deception by Chinese intelligence to recruit current and former U.S. government officials, while the UK’s MI5 security service alerted lawmakers last November about Chinese agents attempting to spy on the British Parliament.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
