The Ministry<\/strong> of<\/strong> Health<\/strong> has intensified the preparation of its hospital network in the face of the risk of imported<\/strong> measles<\/strong> cases, due to greater global circulation of the disease and increased international mobility, especially among nationals who will travel to Mexico, the United States, and Canada<\/strong> for the World Cup.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Currently, in Panama<\/strong>, three imported cases<\/strong> of the disease have been confirmed. Meanwhile, between January and mid-May<\/strong> of this year, 10,920 cases<\/strong> have been reported in Mexico<\/strong>, Canada<\/strong> has notified 1,018<\/strong> cases, and the United States 1,952 cases<\/strong>, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During that period, 184,489 cases<\/strong> of measles in 155 countries<\/strong> have been reported, according to data<\/strong> collected by the Ministry of Health (MINSA<\/strong>). The increase in global circulation<\/strong>, due to the soccer event, is the central argument of the contingency plan<\/strong> activated by the Panamanian authorities.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hospital infrastructure is being evaluated to verify immediate response capacity. (MINSA)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humberto Vanegas<\/strong>, from the Ministry of Health’s Health Service Provision Directorate, reported that the health system is executing<\/strong> a national contingency plan<\/strong> to guarantee a timely<\/strong> and coordinated response<\/strong> to possible suspected cases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the MINSA<\/strong>, the strategy seeks to strengthen<\/strong> the hospital response<\/strong> capacity in the face of external events. The preparation includes<\/strong> an assessment of hospital infrastructure<\/strong> carried out by national and regional health directorates to verify the capacity for immediate response<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>That review also aims to ensure that medical and nursing staff<\/strong> have the necessary resources<\/strong> for patient care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanegas explained that the operational review is already underway<\/strong>. “Two weeks ago we met with all hospital directors and regional directors to review the installed capacities”<\/strong>. Mass vaccination has so far been an effective measure to combat measles. (MINSA)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The physician added that \u201cwe are taking advantage of the experience gained<\/strong> during the COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong> and adopting the necessary measures to ensure an efficient and coordinated response to any eventuality<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MINSA highlighted that all hospitals<\/strong> in the country remain in an active preparation phase<\/strong>, although the measles situation remains under surveillance<\/strong> and control in the national territory. The planned response includes the enablement and adaptation of spaces<\/strong> intended for the safe isolation of patients<\/strong> with suspected cases of the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These spaces seek to avoid contact between suspected cases<\/strong> and other users of health services. According to the health entity, this measure is part of the hospital containment<\/strong> scheme<\/strong> prepared for a possible detection of new infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authorities also strengthened<\/strong> epidemiological surveillance systems<\/strong> and triage processes in emergency rooms.<\/strong> The objective, according to what was reported, is to identify early on people with symptoms compatible with measles<\/strong> and with recent travel history.<\/strong> Strengthening hospital response capacity to foreign events is the Panamanian strategy. The ministry reiterated that it strengthened<\/strong> staff training<\/strong> through the updating of protocols<\/strong>, biosafety manuals, and care procedures. For this update, the system took as a reference<\/strong> the experiences gained during previous health emergencies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The call from the authorities<\/strong> to the population focuses on reviewing and completing immunization schedules,<\/strong> especially during the coming weeks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaccination continues<\/strong> to be the main tool to prevent the disease<\/strong>, authorities indicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vanegas underscored that prevention line with a direct message<\/strong> to the population: \u201cthe best tool to prevent measles continues to be vaccination. Panama has managed to maintain control<\/strong> of this disease thanks to high immunization coverage<\/strong>, so we urge the population to go to health centers<\/strong> and verify their vaccination schedule\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
