Santiago.-<\/strong> Residents of the Ensanche Ram\u00f3n Infante<\/strong><\/a> sector, known as Los Tocanes, in this city held a peaceful march to demand that municipal and government authorities repair their streets, as they reported that the work begun approximately six months ago is progressing slowly and leaving hundreds of families facing difficulties in getting around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the protest, community leaders and residents of the sector demanded the urgent intervention of three main streets and several alleys which, they claim, remain in deplorable conditions despite promises of road improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president of the Ensanche Ram\u00f3n Infante Neighborhood Association, Daribel Fern\u00e1ndez, explained that the community decided to take to the streets due to the lack of concrete responses and the slow progress of the work carried out by a contractor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have been observing the construction work for about six months and we understand that it is too much time for so little work. Only a few minor repairs have been made and we do not see any significant progress. That is why we decided to hold this march peacefully to draw the attention of the authorities,\u201d he\/she expressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fern\u00e1ndez warned that the deterioration of the roads has generated frustration among residents and that the community expects a solution before resorting to more drastic protest measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, community member Josefina S\u00e1nchez recalled that the last major intervention in the area was carried out several years ago and asserted that the streets are currently practically impassable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have been making complaints for years and no one listens to us. The street has deteriorated to the point that it is difficult to travel. The only thing we ask is that the authorities listen to the call of a hardworking community that deserves to live in better conditions,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, community member Francisco Mat\u00edas denounced that the poor condition of the roads even affects children’s school attendance and limits residents’ access to their workplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany times students cannot attend classes due to street conditions. We are tax-paying citizens and we deserve to travel on decent roads. If our peaceful call is not answered, we will continue fighting until this project is completed,\u201d he maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The protesters pointed out that sectors connected to this area, such as Los Guineos, Los Cocos, San Francisco de Jacagua, Pedrito Blanco, and several alleys in the area, are also affected by the deterioration of the roads and the traffic congestion generated at the main access points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to mobility difficulties, community members reported an increase in criminal acts. As they explained, the deep potholes force drivers to slow down or stop, a situation that is allegedly taken advantage of by criminals to commit robberies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents called on the Santiago City Council and the Central Government to accelerate the work and guarantee a definitive solution to a problem that, they assert, affects the safety, education, and quality of life of hundreds of families in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
