Santo Domingo, DR. \u2013<\/em><\/strong> The Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP<\/a>) rejected the initiative promoted by a group of deputies from the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) that seeks to deduct the salary of teachers who participate in strikes or work stoppages, considering that said proposal constitutes an attempt to limit fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic and in Dominican labor legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Menegildo De La Rosa, Secretary of Communications and Public Relations of the ADP, stated that the teachers’ organization opposes any measure aimed at curtailing the right of workers and trade union organizations to carry out peaceful strikes in defense of their demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe right to strike is enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic, specifically in article 62, numeral 6, and is also regulated by the Labor Code in articles 401 to 412 of Law 16-92. No legislative initiative can disregard rights that are part of the national legal system,\u201d stated De La Rosa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The teachers’ union leader clarified that the ADP is not in favor of resorting to strikes as a first option and recalled that, historically, mobilizations have arisen as a consequence of failures by educational authorities to meet the demands of the teaching staff and the educational community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he highlighted that the ADP is currently actively participating in a permanent dialogue table with the Ministry of Education, within the framework of the policy promoted by Minister Luis Miguel De Camps called “The Five Pillars,” through which it seeks to discuss and reach a consensus on solutions to the main problems affecting the national educational system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are betting on dialogue, consensus, and the building of agreements at the national, regional, and district levels, so that the problems of Dominican education can be solved without the need to resort to strikes,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, De La Rosa warned that if the authorities fail to comply with the agreements reached or ignore the demands of the education sector, the ADP reserves the right to resort to the struggle mechanisms that have historically allowed for the achievement of improvements for public education and for education workers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
