Moscow (EFE).- <\/strong>Russian President Vladimir Putin<\/strong> rejected on Friday the proposal from Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, who suggested in an open letter last night that they hold direct negotiations in a third country to end the war.

“For now, I don’t see the point,” Putin said bluntly during the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, while labeling the epistolary style chosen by Zelensky as “rude.”

Putin admitted to having glanced at the content of the letter and asserted that his intention is not to “create the conditions” for a face-to-face meeting between leaders to take place, but quite the opposite, to make it “impossible.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He insisted that such negotiation meetings are meaningless, since what is important, in his opinion, is to reach a definitive agreement that lasts over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It only makes sense for the Ukrainian side, to slow down the offensive of our Armed Forces. That is all. And we do not need a half-year or three-month agreement, but a long-term one. Let the specialists prepare some kind of decision and then we can meet,” he stated.

Putin, who demands the capitulation of the enemy army, has assured on numerous occasions that he will only meet with the Ukrainian leader to put an end to the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking the Donbas is non-negotiable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

He added that the letter says Russia “will never manage” to take the entire Donbas. “In Kyiv, they don’t know that since last April 1st, Russia has completely controlled Luhansk! And that the Kyiv authorities control less than 15% of Donetsk,” he replied.

“We are advancing calmly, but surely towards the fulfillment of these objectives. There is no doubt that we will achieve it,” he pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, he recalled that three weeks ago Kyiv requested a meeting with a Russian businessman, who conveyed to Putin Zelensky’s desire to meet as soon as possible, after which the following day the Ukrainian army bombed the student dormitory in the occupied Luhansk region, where 21 people died.<\/a>

“One should not address the author of that letter, the fan of the epistolary genre, but rather our soldiers at the front (…) the whole country is watching you, is proud of you, trusts you. Keep working, brothers,” he said subsequently, which sparked applause from the Russian audience present in the room.

Regarding the Ukrainian leader’s allusions to Putin’s age (73 years old), he replied that what matters is not the years, but the “capacity for work,” and recommended that he run for re-election, as required by the Ukrainian Constitution, something he did not do in 2024 due to the state of war, which is why the Kremlin chief considers Zelensky an illegitimate leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zelensky’s open letter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In his letter, Zelensky proposes to his Russian counterpart to meet in a third country, such as Switzerland, Turkey, or an Arab country, something Moscow has always opposed.

“You can end your war,” says Zelensky in the missive, where he states that European countries must also participate in the negotiations.

In this regard, Putin criticized today that Kiev proposes only European countries as guarantors and not the White House, although in the text Zelensky clearly alludes to the fact that both the US and Europe must participate in that process.

According to the document, the first step must be a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange, starting with civilians and children kidnapped by Russia.

“Your war has separated Ukraine and Russia forever. The front line today is the line where diplomacy must begin,” he indicates.

At the end of the letter, Zelensky tells Putin that if he does not end the war soon, Russian history dictates that it will be the people who force a change in the country.

“Ukraine has its resources and we can make that fatigue happen. You may end up fighting not for the existence of Russia but for your own existence,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU welcomes the proposal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The European Union and other countries such as Germany and France welcomed the proposal, and in the case of French President Emmanuel Macron, he already considered the Russian demand for Ukraine to withdraw its troops from the Donbas to be obsolete.

In his meeting with representatives of the main global news agencies, including EFE, Putin stated the day before that he is willing to sign peace with Ukraine, provided that it makes concessions, in reference to the withdrawal of its troops from the territory they still control in the Donetsk region.

Furthermore, he ruled out a ceasefire, arguing that peace negotiations can begin while fighting continues, something that Zelensky refuted in his open letter, in which he proposes a truce.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
