Washington .- <\/strong>The United States Government threatened this Thursday to revoke visas and prohibit entry into the country for those who attempt to manipulate the second round of Colombia’s presidential elections on June 21st.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00abThose tempted to undermine or manipulate the democratic process \u2014whether by BUYING VOTES or otherwise\u2014 are warned that they are putting their visas, and those of their families, at risk\u00bb, expressed the Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landau warned that the Donald Trump Administration is “closely monitoring the situation on the Caribbean coast and elsewhere” with the goal of “safeguarding the integrity of Colombia’s upcoming elections.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. is “committed to the protection of democracy in Colombia”<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The undersecretary’s words come after Trump publicly endorsed the far-right candidate Abelardo de la Espriella<\/a> and Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured Congress that his country will ensure that the Colombian elections are “free and fair.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landau wrote that the United States is “committed to the protection of democracy in Colombia” and that, as Rubio has expressed on other occasions, “a U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right” and therefore can be revoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The undersecretary often nicknames himself ‘The Visa Revoker’ for using visa revocation as a pressure tool in United States foreign policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De la Espriella, who obtained 44% of the votes in the first round, will compete in the second round on June 21st against leftist Iv\u00e1n Cepeda, who obtained 41% of the votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colombian President Gustavo Petro, from the same political coalition as Cepeda, has denounced alleged irregularities in the preliminary count of the first round, while De la Espriella has accused the president of carrying out “the largest vote-buying scheme in Colombia’s history” through the distribution of public funds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
