The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi<\/strong>,<\/a> described the recent attack with an explosive drone<\/strong> against a nuclear plant in the United Arab Emirates<\/strong> (UAE) as a \u201cvery serious event<\/strong>,\u201d and warned of \u201cunacceptable risks<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The attack, attributed by UAE<\/strong> to a drone launched from Iraq<\/strong>, caused a fire on May 17 at an electrical facility located outside the perimeter of the Barakah<\/strong> nuclear power plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plant, in operation since 2019, represents the first nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates<\/strong> and is part of the national program that seeks to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on gas and oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>During a press conference in Vienna<\/strong>, within the framework of an extraordinary meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors<\/strong>, Grossi<\/strong> highlighted the \u201cvery successful reaction<\/strong>\u201d of the Emirati nuclear operator following the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe system responded quite well. But I am sure that analyses and evaluations will be carried out, for example, on the layout of the external power supply lines,\u201d stated the general director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia<\/strong> convened an extraordinary meeting of the Board<\/strong>, held behind closed doors to address the attack in the UAE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his opening remarks at the meeting, Grossi<\/strong> stressed that \u201cmilitary activities against nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities entail unacceptable risks<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNuclear safety is fundamental and applicable to everyone, without exception<\/strong>. There are no double or triple standards here for the IAEA<\/strong>. An attack on any facility, wherever it may be, is unacceptable, a red line, a taboo,\u201d stated Grossi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IAEA Board is scheduled to meet next Monday for its quarterly summer meeting, which will address the situation in various conflict zones, such as Ukraine, Iran<\/strong>, and the Persian Gulf<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, several nuclear facilities have been attacked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Zaporizhzhia power plant, the largest in Europe and located in southern Ukraine, was targeted by drones<\/a> and projectiles from both Russia and Ukraine.
