Mexico City.- <\/strong>Mexico City<\/strong> broke the Guinness World Record<\/strong> this Saturday for the largest human wave (massive movement of fans) in the world outside of a stadium<\/strong>, an event that brought together tens of thousands of people and turned into a street party with five days left until the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To formalize this milestone, authorities in the Mexican capital summoned participants three hours before the start of the so-called ‘World Wave’, which began around 10:30 local time (16:30 GMT) and took place on the iconic Paseo de la Reforma, one of the most important avenues in Mexico City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We achieved the biggest wave in the world,” asserted the Secretary of Tourism of the North American capital, Alejandra Frausto.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Judges from the Guinness World Record<\/strong> were present at the event to verify the number of attendees, who will later specify the exact number of participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The previous record was held by the Portuguese city of Lisbon, which in 2007 gathered more than 8,000 people in a public park, but today Mexico City surpassed it by a wide margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The atmosphere was festive and the green color of the Mexico national team’s kit<\/strong> predominated, which will debut on June 11 in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup against South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There is a contrast of feelings here because more important social aspects are happening in Mexico, but well, this is also a party, it is celebrated every four years and it seems very viable to me that people come to enjoy, to take advantage of these events that are global,” explained Iv\u00e1n Orozco to EFE.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This 44-year-old man was wearing the Mexican national team jersey and highlighted that the inhabitants of that country go out to “celebrate these types of activities, they dress up, they put on makeup (…) and they take advantage of it and enjoy it to the fullest.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Eyes will be on Mexico, the United States, and Canada. We as Latinos, in particular, will have our eyes fixed here in Latin America. And besides that, this event will also be used to carry out very Mexican activities,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of the participants were adorned with flags or traditional hats, as is the case with Lupita Mercado, who pointed out that she gets “goosebumps” at the opportunity to be able to experience another World Cup in her country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Let’s hope we do well so we can be celebrating here at the Angel of Independence, where everyone commemorates and has the party,” he mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, Gustavo God\u00ednez added that the atmosphere at the wave is “awesome” with flags of “all colors”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I would like to break this record. I want to be a part of it and contribute a grain of sand to this football passion (…) It is going to be another World Cup in one of the most iconic stadiums, the Azteca, and it will certainly carry weight. Everyone is excited,” he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The record for the world’s largest wave was 157,000 people, but that was recorded inside a stadium, and the Mexican movement took place in the streets.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In this year’s World Cup, held in Mexico, Canada, and the United States, 48 national teams from the five continents will face each other, making it the tournament with the most national teams in its history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
