Peruvian institutions have increased surveillance for this runoff election, in addition to the main international electoral observation missions led by the European Union (EU) and the Organization of American States (OAS)<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lima.-<\/strong> The second round of voting for Peru’s presidential elections<\/strong> began this Sunday in the Andean country to choose between right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori<\/strong> and left-wing candidate Roberto S\u00e1nchez<\/strong> as the country’s ninth president in ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 27.3 million Peruvians<\/strong> are called to the polls in a long day that began in the national territory at 7:00 local time (12:00 GMT) and will last for ten hours, until 17:00 (22:00 GMT), at which time voting will close to give way to a count that is expected to last for several days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this election, voters must choose between the daughter and political heir of former president Alberto Fujimori<\/strong> (1990-2000), who was sentenced to prison for crimes against humanity and corruption scandals; or the squire of the imprisoned former president Pedro Castillo (2021-2022), who is serving a prison sentence for a failed coup d’\u00e9tat at the end of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first option involves embracing Fujimorism once again and giving it total control of the government a quarter of a century after its fall, something Keiko Fujimori seeks to achieve for the fourth consecutive time after having lost the three previous elections in the runoff to Ollanta Humala (2011), Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (2016), and Pedro Castillo (2021).<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The second option involves reclaiming the symbolic and also controversial figure of Castillo, a humble teacher from the working classes who reached the Presidency and whom S\u00e1nchez has promised to free as a form of reparation toward rural sectors, who believe that the political and economic elites, led by Keiko Fujimori, did not let him govern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fujimorism and anti-Fujimorism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The contest has once again been divided between Fujimorism and anti-Fujimorism<\/strong>, the two forces that have been clashing almost incessantly in Peru since 1990, with the balance slightly in favor of the latter in the last three elections, obtaining narrow victories that in 2016 and 2021 were by a margin of just 40,000 votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything indicates that a similar situation will occur in this runoff between Fujimori and S\u00e1nchez,<\/strong> who arrive at the decisive day without it being possible to anticipate the winner who will obtain the right to govern the country for the next five years (2026-2031).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the last two elections, Fujimori did not accept the results and in the most recent one, against Castillo, she even alleged without solid evidence an supposed fraud against her<\/strong> and sought to annul thousands of her rival’s votes to reverse the election in her favor, a scenario that could happen again after the incidents and controversies experienced in the first round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The April 12 elections were marred by major delays in the opening of polling stations in the capital, Lima, due to a lack of electoral material, which fueled allegations of fraud launched without sufficient evidence by far-right candidate Rafael L\u00f3pez Aliaga, who missed the runoff by a margin of 21,000 votes behind S\u00e1nchez.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In that sense, Peruvian institutions have increased surveillance for this runoff,<\/strong> added to the main international electoral observation missions in charge of the European Union (EU) and the Organization of American States (OAS)<\/a>, which have more than 250 people in total deployed throughout the country and which already ruled out any type of fraud in the first round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voting also takes place abroad, where there are 1.2 million Peruvians eligible to vote who could be key to defining the outcome of the contest, concentrated mainly in the largest concentrations in Buenos Aires (115,097), Santiago de Chile (113,887), Madrid (105,493), and Barcelona (79,606).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fujimori claims to have 95,000 delegates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The right-wing candidate for the Presidency of Peru, Keiko Fujimori, who is competing this Sunday in the runoff election against leftist Roberto S\u00e1nchez, claimed to have 95,000 delegates to watch over and protect her votes at each of the polling stations<\/strong> spread across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
