Havana.-<\/strong> Cuba received this Sunday a donation of 1,700 tons of food and other basic products, coming from Mexico and Belize<\/strong>, intended to alleviate the shortages suffered by most of its population due to the energy and economic crisis, reinforced by the United States blockade measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State media on the island reported that the commercial vessel Asian Katra<\/strong> arrived at the port of Havana with the humanitarian aid shipment as a “sign of cooperation and solidarity from the Governments and peoples of Mexico and Belize”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, they indicated that solidarity organizations with the island, Cuban residents in both countries, and a call from the Mexican newspaper La Jornada, among other actors, contributed to “managing, organizing, and forming” this operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upon receiving the donation, the Minister of Domestic Trade, Betsy D\u00edaz<\/strong>, highlighted Mexico’s “unconditional and historic” aid and thanked the authorities, public figures, and organizations of both nations for their support of the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, Mexico has positioned itself as one of the most active regional partners in humanitarian support to Cuba with shipments of fuel and various cargoes of essential products.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The arrival of this cargo adds to other aid operations received from Brazil, Uruguay, China, Spain, South Korea, Japan, Canada, UN agencies, and one sent by Colombia that announced it is sailing toward the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March and April the ‘Our America Convoy’<\/strong>, made up of activists from several countries in Europe, Mexico, and the United States, also brought several tons of food, medical supplies, solar panels, photovoltaic systems, and educational materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuba has been suffering from a deep economic<\/strong> and social crisis for six years, which has progressively worsened since last January with the oil blockade applied by the U.S. -described by the UN as contrary to international law- to which Washington has added a series of sanctions that have reinforced its pressure on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cuba, which had already accumulated six years of deep economic crisis<\/strong>, is now practically paralyzed by the lack of fuel, from hospitals to gas stations and from public transport to state-owned companies, with shortages of medicines, high inflation, partial dollarization, and blackouts that reach large regions of the country for up to more than 20 hours a day.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
