Israel and Iran announced the cessation of their mutual attacks<\/strong> on Monday following the most intense direct exchange since the truce that took effect on April 8, in an episode that threatened to derail the peace negotiations sponsored by Washington<\/strong> and that shook international energy markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The trigger was an Israeli bombardment on the suburbs of Beirut on Sunday, to which Tehran responded with a salvo of missiles. Israel retaliated with attacks against several Iranian cities, including the capital, and targeted air defense systems and the Mahshahr<\/strong> petrochemical complex in the southwest of the country. According to Iran’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, 15 people were injured in those attacks, 14 of them in Mahshahr county, with no fatalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The command of the Iranian armed forces was the first to announce the ceasefire, claiming to have \u201cinflicted a forceful response\u201d<\/strong> on Israel. However, it warned that \u201cif acts of aggression and hostility continue, including in southern Lebanon, much more severe measures will be taken\u201d. Hours later, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/strong> confirmed the cessation on his part: \u201cAfter the blows we dealt to the terrorist regime in Tehran, it stopped attacking us\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Netanyahu added that if Iran \u201cmakes the mistake of resuming its attacks,\u201d Israel would respond \u201cwith full force.\u201d US President Donald Trump<\/strong>, who had demanded that both sides stop the attacks \u201cimmediately,\u201d posted on social media that negotiations are moving forward \u201cunless ignorance or stupidity get in the way,\u201d according to Reuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the cessation of hostilities between the two countries, fighting on Lebanese soil did not stop. An Israeli bombardment hit a vehicle in the city of Tyre, in the south of the country, according to the Lebanese state news agency NNA. The Red Cross indicated that the impact occurred near one of its centers in the city, with four rescuers wounded.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that another attack in the Nabatiyeh region killed seven people, including a Syrian child and a woman. The Israeli army claimed to have intercepted three projectiles launched from Lebanon; an AFP journalist who was near the border witnessed three explosions in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz<\/strong> rejected Iranian warnings regarding Lebanon in a statement: \u201cAny Iranian attempt to establish a link between Lebanon and Iran for the purpose of attacking Israel will be met with a response of great force.\u201d<\/strong> Israel maintains that its campaign in that country must be treated independently of any agreement with Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei<\/strong>, acknowledged that the diplomatic process could be \u201caffected\u201d by the escalation, although he assured that consultations were still underway. While he was speaking at the Foreign Ministry headquarters in Tehran, a loud explosion shook the building, according to an AFP journalist present at the press conference. Baghaei described the climate of the exchanges with Washington as one of \u201cextreme suspicion\u201d and accused Israel of acting in Lebanon to sabotage diplomacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian<\/strong>, stated after the announcement of the ceasefire that his country had not \u201cabandoned either the battlefield or the negotiating table.\u201d Oil prices rose by up to 5% during the peak of the attacks, according to Reuters, before trimming gains when Iran announced the end of its first wave. The dollar also retreated from its highest level in nearly two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tehran continues to block transit through the Strait of Hormuz<\/strong>, which before the conflict channeled one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and liquefied natural gas, according to Reuters. Iranian demands for any agreement include the lifting of international sanctions, the release of billions of dollars in frozen assets, and the recognition of its control over the strait. Trump has conditioned any pact on guarantees that Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa<\/strong>, announced on Monday that negotiations between Beirut and Tel Aviv were scheduled to resume in Washington. The Houthis<\/strong> of Yemen, aligned with Iran, issued a statement in which they promised to attack Israeli shipping in the Red Sea and claimed to have also launched missiles against Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israeli authorities ordered the closure of schools across the country on Monday, although the Ministry of Education announced their reopening for Tuesday. In Tehran, a 35-year-old chef identified as Farhad summarized the mood of the capital to AFP: \u201cThe economy is paralyzed, society is suffering from post-traumatic stress, morale is at rock bottom. No one knows what tomorrow will bring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
