Iran launched missiles and drones<\/strong> against U.S. targets in the region following attacks by the United States Central Command<\/strong> (CENTCOM) on Iranian territory, in an escalation that was triggered after President Donald Trump<\/strong> accused Tehran of shooting down a U.S. Army Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the launch of missiles and drones via a Telegram message posted early Wednesday morning, local time. The CENTCOM attacks, carried out at 5:00 PM Eastern time (11:00 PM peninsular time), were described by the U.S. military command as \u201ca proportional response to unprovoked Iranian aggression,\u201d<\/strong> as posted on the social network X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump had previously announced on social media that Iran shot down the aircraft while it was patrolling over the strait, and noted that the United States \u201cmust, by necessity, respond to this attack.\u201d Both crew members were safe, according to the president.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi<\/strong>, responded with a direct warning to Washington via X: \u201cLeave our region, if you wish to be safe\u201d<\/strong>. In the same message, the Iranian diplomat warned that the country’s armed forces \u201cwill not leave any attack or threat unanswered\u201d and recalled that \u201cthe history of the Persian Gulf contains numerous chapters on the terrible fate that foreign intruders have met\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Araqchi also alluded to previous operations by noting that, \u201cdespite their defeats on the battlefield, the United States decided to test our determination.\u201d The statement was published in the early hours of Wednesday, shortly after CENTCOM confirmed the attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The Tasnim agency, linked to the IRGC, reported explosions in the Hormozgan province, in the Sirik region, in the city of Minab, and on Qeshm Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz. The governor of Minab later clarified, according to the Mehr News agency, that “no attack on the city” as such has been reported: the detonations perceived inland originated from the coastal strip adjacent to the strait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) indicated that the U.S. attacks in the south of the country struck two water reservoirs in the Bamani district, near Sirik, disrupting the water supply in the area. The US portal Axios<\/em> cited a US official according to whom US forces bombed Iranian air defense and radar systems in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian state media indicated that the wave of US attacks in the south had \u201csubsided\u201d after the first few hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The events further strained a two-month truce that had already suffered a deterioration the previous day, when Iran and Israel exchanged fire for the first time since the fragile ceasefire went into effect in April. Iranian state television reported that the Israeli attacks that Monday caused the death of at least two members of the country’s air defense units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the United States and Israel began operations against Iran on February 28, the conflict has shaken the global economy, raised energy prices, and made basic goods, including food, more expensive.
