Bogot\u00e1<\/strong>.- Two retired Colombian Army generals and 25 other military personnel, charged by the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) for war crimes and crimes against humanity, admitted their responsibility for 209 murders and 65 forced disappearances falsely presented as combat casualties in the department of Meta (center) between 2002 and 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For the first time in the country’s history, two retired brigadier generals from the National Army publicly acknowledged the existence of superior orders aimed at meeting casualty quotas,” stated the JEP, a tribunal created by the peace agreement signed between the Colombian Government and the demobilized FARC guerrilla group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court’s investigation documented 209 murders falsely presented as combat casualties, known in Colombia as false positives, including ten minors, as well as 65 forced disappearances and one attempted homicide that occurred in Meta between 2002 and 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two retired brigadier generals are Carlos Ovidio Saavedra S\u00e1enz and Francisco Jos\u00e9 Ardila Uribe, former commanders of the Seventh Army Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saavedra admitted that he exerted pressure on the commanders to increase the reported casualties and acknowledged having used expressions that conveyed the message of turning to paramilitary groups to produce operational results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For his part, Ardila acknowledged that he failed in his command and control duties when he was in charge of the Seventh Brigade and asserted that the institutional incentive system contributed to the commission of these crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The people who were murdered were not combatants. They were civilians, with life plans, families, dreams, and aspirations, whom we stigmatized as criminals<\/strong>“, stated Ardila during a hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside them, 25 other former members of the public security forces belonging to the 21st Infantry Battalion ‘Pantano de Vargas’ (Bivar) and the Rural Gaula Meta (Gamet) acknowledged responsibility, including retired colonels, lieutenant colonels, majors, captains, non-commissioned officers, and professional soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November 2025, the JEP charged the 27 individuals appearing before it with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and other offenses related to the “false positives,” one of the darkest episodes of the Colombian conflict, in which members of the Army made innocent people disappear and murdered them to pass them off as guerrilla casualties in order to obtain rewards and promotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The JEP has accounted for 7,837 of these cases, which were committed mainly between 2002 and 2010, during the presidency of \u00c1lvaro Uribe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
