S\u00e1nchez Ram\u00edrez<\/strong>.- The executive director of the National Health Service (SNS), Dr. Julio Landr\u00f3n, inaugurated the new Mental Health Unit of the Inmaculada Concepci\u00f3n Hospital, in the municipality of Cotu\u00ed, S\u00e1nchez Ram\u00edrez province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the inauguration and ribbon-cutting ceremony, Dr. Landr\u00f3n highlighted that mental health constitutes one of the priority axes of the Government led by President Luis Abinader, due to the growing impact of mental disorders worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt least one family member has a depression problem, an alcoholism problem, or a dependency problem. It is important to have teams and structures at a national level that allow us to follow up on these problems that we often want to deny<\/strong>\u201d, expressed the head of the SNS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landr\u00f3n also warned about the high incidence of suicide among youth aged 15 to 19, noting that the Government has placed special emphasis on strengthening mental health services throughout the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official explained that many patients with mental disorders have been historically excluded from hospital centers, which is why the SNS is working to ensure that every hospital in the country has a crisis care unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We want every hospital to have spaces with psychiatrists, psychologists, and support teams, where anyone going through a crisis can be attended to, admitted, treated, and subsequently reintegrated into society,” he indicated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The new unit at the Inmaculada Concepci\u00f3n Hospital has four beds and is part of the national plan to strengthen mental health and psychological care services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landr\u00f3n reported that, with the integration of several mental health units in hospitals and penitentiary centers, the Public Health Network currently has 236 beds available<\/strong> for the care of patients with mental disorders throughout the national territory. Likewise, he assured that before the end of the year, the goal is to exceed 500 beds for crisis care<\/strong>, which will allow for a significant expansion in the coverage of these specialized services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The director of the SNS reported that the Government is currently developing several infrastructure and specialized mental health care projects, including a psychosocial center in Hig\u00fcey and another in Moca, as well as the recovery of the Padre Billini Psychosocial Rehabilitation Center (formerly 28), through the Ministry of Housing, Habitat and Buildings (MIVHED<\/a>) and the enabling of a child and pediatric psychosocial center at the facilities of the Jos\u00e9 Manuel Rodr\u00edguez Jim\u00e9nez Hospital (formerly Santo Socorro).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, he announced that in the coming months, work will continue to strengthen the national mental health network with new interventions and the addition of specialized centers to expand the capacity for response and care for the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Follow-up from primary care<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landr\u00f3n emphasized that the national strategy is not limited to hospitals, but includes strengthening primary care to provide continuous follow-up for patients with mental disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have a duty to have psychologists in primary care centers, to guarantee follow-up, free medication, and compliance with medical appointments for these patients,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
