At least 11 people<\/strong> died in Ukraine<\/strong> in a new massive Russian attack,Russia suffers a massive drone attack against Moscow, pressure from Kiev to end the war<\/a> intense over Kiev<\/strong>, where the iconic Orthodox Dormition Cathedral<\/strong> ended up in flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Three other people died in the Russian city of Tula<\/strong>, about 200 km south of Moscow<\/strong>, in a Ukrainian drone attack, according to the regional governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Kyiv<\/strong>, Russian bombardments hit numerous neighborhoods in the city this time, causing at least five deaths and 34 injuries<\/strong>, according to local authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Five other people \u2014four rescuers and one municipal official\u2014 died in the large city of Kharkiv<\/strong>, in the northeast, according to the Minister of the Interior, Igor Klimenko<\/strong>. One more person died in Kherson<\/strong>, in the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Residents of the capital ran to shelters, as a blinding light illuminated the sky, reddened by fires, AFP journalists confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>One of the fires affected the roof of the Dormition Orthodox Cathedral<\/strong>, located in the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra<\/strong> complex, which is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong>, indicated the mayor of the capital, Vitali Klitschko<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The complex dates back to the 11th century<\/strong>, and holds significant importance for Orthodox Christians in both Ukraine and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moscow<\/strong> said it had carried out a \u201cmassive bombardment\u201d overnight against military facilities in Kyiv<\/strong>, Kharkiv<\/strong>, and the Dnipropetrovsk<\/strong> region, but denied targeting the capital’s monastic complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian Ministry of Defense asserted that the fire at the Cave Monastery<\/strong> was due to an \u201coutdated\u201d Patriot air defense missile<\/strong>. Firefighters are working to extinguish a fire at the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, which was damaged during Russian missile and drone attacks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy<\/strong> asserted that Russia \u201cdeliberately\u201d attacked the area of the monastic complex with two drones and described the attack as \u201cone of Russia\u2019s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the cathedral’s facades was shattered, and the roof partially destroyed. More than ten fire trucks were deployed to the area, an AFP<\/strong> photographer confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ukrainian security service announced that it will publicly display the remains of one of the drones that struck the complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unesco<\/strong> condemned the attack in a statement, which \u201ccaused significant damage to the exterior and interior of the Dormition Cathedral,\u201d and its surroundings, and stated it is at the disposal of the authorities to help assess them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastic complex, considered one of the main spiritual centers of Orthodox Christianity in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orthodox churches, a vector of power<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Makarii<\/strong>, a monk living in the monastery, told AFP<\/strong> that he jumped \u201cout of bed\u201d after hearing a loud bang at five in the morning and saw the complex engulfed in \u201cfire and smoke\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An emergency services worker stated that \u201ceverything is fine inside\u201d the cathedral and that the roof absorbed most of the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalia Korol<\/strong>, a museum employee from Kyiv<\/strong>, declared herself \u201coutraged\u201d by the attack. \u201cIt is a sanctuary. They themselves say it is their sanctuary. You cannot attack sanctuaries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monastic complex, whose origins date back a millennium, made headlines in recent years due to the expulsion of monks accused of maintaining ties with Russia<\/strong>. In January, other buildings in the complex were damaged by Russian shells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0Orthodox Church of Ukraine<\/strong>\u00a0officially separated from the\u00a0Moscow Patriarchate<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a02022<\/strong>, following the invasion. Two years later, the government of\u00a0Kyiv<\/strong>\u00a0banned the branch of the Russian Church in Ukraine. In another part of the capital, the Obolonskyi district, a nine-story residential building took a direct hit. The damage spread to several urban areas and mobilized emergency teams for much of the early morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Patriarch of Moscow<\/strong>, Kirill<\/strong>, has stood out as a fervent defender of President Vladimir Putin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust like the war of aggression that Russia<\/strong> has been waging against Ukraine<\/strong> for more than four years, nothing justifies this attack on our universal heritage,” said French President Emmanuel Macron<\/strong> on X, condemning the attack on the Ukrainian monastic complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian army claimed to have launched a \u201cmassive\u201d bombardment against Ukrainian industrial facilities. The Ukrainian Air Force<\/strong> specified for its part that Moscow<\/strong> launched 70 missiles and 611 drones<\/strong>, mostly against Kyiv<\/strong>, of which 50 and 582<\/strong> were intercepted, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian bombardment comes after the announcement of an agreement between the United States<\/strong> and Iran<\/strong> to end the war in the Middle East<\/strong>, and just hours before a G7<\/strong> summit in France<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong> specifically asked the leaders of the G7<\/strong>, who are meeting in France<\/strong> starting this Monday, to intensify pressure on Russia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
