A Russian frigate fired warning shots<\/strong> at a British<\/a>-flagged yacht in the English Channel<\/strong><\/em> on Tuesday morning. The incident, which left no injuries or material damage, occurred about 32 kilometers<\/strong> south of the Isle of Wight, outside the United Kingdom’s territorial waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The Admiral Grigorovich<\/strong>\u2014nearly 125 meters long and with a crew of up to 220 people\u2014opened fire less than 500 meters from the yacht, which continued its journey without interruption. The frigate had been deployed in the area for weeks, escorting sanctioned Russian vessels under the surveillance of the Royal Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UK Ministry of Defence<\/strong> merely stated that it is investigating \u201creports of an incident in the English Channel\u201d and stressed that the shots were not aimed at the vessel. The HMS Tyne<\/strong>, a Royal Navy patrol ship, approached the yacht to gather information and check on the status of its crew. The unpowered craft had approached the warship in the fog after setting sail from the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hours later, the Russian Ministry of Defense<\/strong> confirmed the shots and indicated that the yacht did not respond to previous warnings. \u201cTo draw the attention of the yacht’s crew, flares were fired and acoustic signals were issued. Despite these measures, the vessel continued its dangerous approach,\u201d the government noted in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe frigate commander decided to fire warning shots in the direction of the vessel using the ship’s light artillery\u201d<\/strong>, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The episode occurred two days after British commandos intercepted the oil tanker Smyrtos<\/strong>, linked to Russia and suspected of transporting oil in violation of international sanctions, in the first operation of this kind led by UK forces since the start of the war in Ukraine. Its captain, an Indian citizen, appeared before a court on Tuesday, which ordered his pretrial detention. Authorities ruled out any link between the two events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the warning shots and stated that the yacht did not respond to flares, acoustic signals, or prior warnings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tension in British waters is not new. In November, London warned Moscow after detecting the spy ship Yantar<\/strong> north of Scotland. In April, a frigate, aircraft, and hundreds of personnel tracked a Russian attack submarine and two spy submarines in the same area for weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most direct precedent dates back five years, when the destroyer HMS Defender<\/strong> was involved in a similar episode in the Black Sea, near Crimea. Russia claimed to have fired warning shots to force it to withdraw, a version that London denied. It was the first Russian acknowledgment of the use of live ammunition to deter a NATO vessel since the Cold War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, James Cartlidge<\/strong>, stated that the UK \u201cshould be in no doubt that Russia poses a direct threat<\/strong>\u201d. Liberal Democrat James MacClearly<\/strong> was more categorical: \u201cRussia is literally on our doorstep. Aggression and intimidation in our waters must not be tolerated.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
