Santiago, Chile<\/strong>.- The Chilean Investigative Police confirmed this Friday that they have located 33 of the 64 Haitian children<\/strong> declared unreachable by the Comptroller’s Office, following an investigation into their entry into the country in 2025, which the Jos\u00e9 Antonio Kast government flagged as an irregular process.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The information was provided by PDI General Eduardo Cerna in a press conference at La Moneda Palace (seat of government), together with the Minister of Social Development, Mar\u00eda Jes\u00fas Wulf, appointed by Kast to lead an inter-institutional working group “to expedite the search for information<\/strong>“.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

“It is a joint effort, an intersectoral roundtable, and regarding the Comptroller’s report, which alludes to 64 minors who had not been located, we have already found 33 of them (children) who are living with binding families, fathers, mothers, and siblings,” declared Cerna.<\/p>n<\/blockquote>n”\n\n“n

The Comptroller’s investigation points out that through various charter flights between January and October 2025, and within the framework of family reunification under Chilean legislation, 105 minors accompanied by at least 12 adults<\/strong> with whom they have no blood ties entered the country, noting that the whereabouts of 64 of them were unknown.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Based on that report, the head of the National Migration Service (SERMIG<\/a>), Frank Sauerbaum, filed a complaint regarding alleged irregularities in the arrival of children and adolescents from Haiti to Chile, accusing a presumed case of human trafficking and supporting an estimate of 200 cases.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Cerna, however, stressed that the children “are living in their places, it is not that they are missing, lost, or in regular admission” and that they are working to corroborate “what is already there, which are the records with which they were handed over to the binding adults. The young people entered with their documentation, it was verified<\/strong>“.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The official explained that because the process was carried out on charter flights, entry is processed at separate security booths where documentation is reviewed and then an enforcement officer reunites the minor with their family member, recording the information in a report.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

“No minor, as it was intended to be made known, arrived at the airport, passed through, and left,” he added, ruling out that these were entries without verification.<\/p>n<\/blockquote>n”\n\n“n

Minister Wulf, for her part, stated that “while the immediate focus has been on the 64 children and adolescents, we will strengthen the protocols and continue to advance in the coordination with the different agencies to consolidate the information and data available.”<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Between 2022 and 2025, Chile authorized a total of 16,498 family reunification processes for Haitians, the majority for minors, according to official figures.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) estimated in its latest foreign population report that a total of 188,131 people from Haiti reside in Chile, constituting the fourth largest foreign community in the country and representing approximately 9.8% of the total migrant population.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The vast majority arrived in the 2016 migration wave, when Haitians could enter as tourists without a visa and later regularize their status if they found work, something that changed starting in 2018. <\/p>n”\n\n“n
