Santo Domingo.-<\/em><\/strong> The priest <\/a>Abraham Apolinar expressed his support this Monday for the request to eliminate the migration protocol applied in public hospitals, asserting that the Catholic Church has maintained a critical position regarding migration controls in health centers and has denounced cases of alleged irregular deportations.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u201cWe as a Church join in this request. It is the voice of the bishops who, in a document from July of last year, requested President Luis Abinader to remove immigration control from medical wards,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>he affirmed.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Apolinar claimed to have witnessed situations he described as abuses, including the deportation of women who had just given birth and undocumented Dominican individuals who, he said, were detained due to their physical appearance or Haitian ancestry.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u201cWe have witnessed many abuses, including minors who have been deported, Dominican women who did not have documents and who have been deported because they are Black or because they are of Haitian descent,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> he\/she maintained.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The priest also cited a recent expression by Pope Leo XIV to defend the dignity of migrants.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u201cDignity does not depend on a passport. Dignity is not lost when crossing a border. Human dignity is a right that comes to us from God,\u201d he stated.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

During an exchange with journalists, Apolinar responded to those who invoke compliance with immigration laws and biblical passages about obedience to authorities, arguing that, in his view, the reported actions contradict both the Constitution and current legislation.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u201cThe Constitution is being violated and the Migration Law is being violated. The law prohibits deporting a pregnant woman, prohibits deporting minors, and prohibits deporting a newborn,\u201d he stated.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Likewise, he insisted that the presence of immigration agents in hospitals is generating fear among patients, especially pregnant women, which could cause some to avoid going to health centers.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u201cWe are asking for the laws to be followed and, above all, for immigration enforcement to be removed from hospitals, because there are people who are not going to the hospital,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> he\/she expressed.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

When questioned about whether these situations also affect immigrants of other nationalities, Apolinar pointed out that most of the cases he knows involve Haitian citizens, descendants of Haitians, and undocumented Black Dominicans.<\/p>n”\n\n“n
