Devers opened the ninth inning with a six-pitch walk and the coaching staff decided to replace him with Jonah Cox, looking to take advantage of his greater speed on the bases. However, as Cox headed to the field, Devers signaled with his hand indicating that he did not want to leave the game.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Manager Tony Vitello explained that the decision was made with the intention of increasing the chances of tying the game.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u201cHe was signaling to us that he was good to run,\u201d commented Vitello.<\/p>n<\/blockquote>n”\n\n“n

The strategist pointed out that Devers had leg discomfort, although he was available to play, and highlighted that the Dominican’s desire to remain in the game comes from his competitive mentality.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Cox was chosen because he possesses superior sprint speed: he records 28.8 feet per second and had stolen 27 bases in Triple-A this season. Devers, for his part, has a speed of 26.2 feet per second and has not recorded any stolen bases since his arrival in San Francisco.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Vitello assured that he does not see the incident as a problem within the team and highlighted the competitive attitude of the Dominican third baseman.<\/p>n”\n\n“n
