Bogot\u00e1, Colombia.<\/strong> \u2013 The Colombian Government ordered the liquidation of the Ministry of Equality and Equity<\/strong>, one of the main initiatives promoted by President Gustavo Petro<\/strong> at the beginning of his term and which was initially headed by Vice President Francia M\u00e1rquez<\/strong>.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The decision was adopted through an official decree that transforms the entity into the Ministry of Equality and Equity in Liquidation<\/strong>, thus initiating the administrative process for its closure, which will have an initial term of one year.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The Ministry of Equality was created in 2023 with the purpose of designing and executing public policies aimed at women, youth, ethnic communities, the LGBTI population, peasants, people with disabilities, migrants, and other sectors considered vulnerable or historically excluded.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The portfolio was initially under the direction of Vice President Francia M\u00e1rquez, who assumed the responsibility of promoting the inclusion and equity policies championed by the Petro administration.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Constitutional Court Ruling<\/h3>n”\n\n“n

The liquidation of the ministry comes after the expiration of the deadline granted by the Constitutional Court to correct the errors detected during the legislative process that allowed for the creation of the entity.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

In 2024, the Colombian high court declared the law that created the ministry unconstitutional, considering that there was not a sufficient study on the fiscal impact of the new institution. However, the Court allowed the entity to continue operating temporarily while the Government processed the initiative again before Congress.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The deadline to rectify those irregularities concluded recently without a new law being approved, which forced the Executive to initiate the liquidation process.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Criticism and difficulties<\/h3>n”\n\n“n

During its operation, the ministry faced questions regarding the low execution of its budget and administrative difficulties that affected several of its programs.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Opposition sectors considered that the entity represented an increase in state bureaucracy, while social organizations and human rights defenders defended the importance of maintaining an institution dedicated to inclusion and equity policies.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Uncertainty regarding social programs<\/h3>n”\n\n“n

The decision has generated concern among employees and beneficiaries of the programs developed by the entity, due to the uncertainty regarding the future of policies aimed at vulnerable populations.<\/p>n”\n\n“n
