Islamabad<\/strong> \u2014 The United States and Iran were at odds on Tuesday over whether Tehran <\/a>had agreed to allow UN inspections of its nuclear facilities. As officials negotiated how to definitively end the war in Iran, a parallel plan emerged to unblock maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The disagreement over nuclear inspections arose while the President of Iran was meeting with Pakistani mediators and technical teams from the United States, and while Iran continued talks in Switzerland.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

A United Nations agency announced on Tuesday that a plan was being developed to move stranded ships and their thousands of crew members through the strait, a vital passage for global energy supplies that Iran had blocked after the United States and Israel launched the war on February 28.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Hours earlier, a spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmail Baghaei, told reporters in Tehran that UN inspectors had no plans to examine the nuclear facilities bombed by the United States last year, thus rejecting comments made the previous day by US Vice President JD Vance.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

President Donald Trump told the press on Tuesday that if Iran did not agree to inspections, he would immediately halt talks with Tehran. However, he added that there was no rush for such inspections to begin.<\/a><\/p>n”\n\n“n

The International Atomic Energy Agency has not responded to requests for comment on its possible role. It has been present in Iran intermittently since Israel’s 12-day war in 2025, but has not been granted access to the bombed enrichment sites that were targeted by the United States.<\/a><\/p>n”\n\n“n

Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, although it possesses highly enriched uranium that could be used to manufacture atomic bombs, if it so decided, according to the IAEA.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The United States and Iran reached an agreement last week that requires Tehran to reduce its enriched uranium stockpiles and lifts U.S.-imposed sanctions on the country, while granting each party 60 days to work out broader agreements.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Plan to evacuate stranded sailors through the Strait of Hormuz<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

The plan to evacuate the 11,000 crew members trapped on the ships is being carried out in cooperation with Iran, Oman, all other coastal states in the region, the United States, and the maritime industry, according to the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Dom\u00ednguez.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u201cWe have obtained the necessary security guarantees and have thoroughly verified the conditions for safe navigation to support these operations,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The organization stated that the transfer of the vessels will be carried out gradually to avoid any risk of collision.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The United States has stated that negotiators have analyzed “mechanisms” to ensure that the strait remains open. Maritime traffic is increasing, but doubts persist about who controls the passage.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Data analytics firm Kpler confirmed that 39 ships crossed the strait on Monday, following about 92 crossings between Friday and Sunday. Before the war, approximately 100 ships per day made the crossing.<\/a><\/p>n”\n\n“n

Two US aircraft carriers were still operating in the Middle East, according to the US military’s Central Command.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Iran’s president makes his first visit to Islamabad since the war began<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari discussed a range of issues on Tuesday, including regional peace and economic cooperation, according to a statement from the presidency in Islamabad.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

It was the first visit by the Iranian president since the United States and Israel began the war against Iran. In a press conference following the meeting, he stated that the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran did not mention the Iranian missile program.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u201cIf it were not for Iran’s missile capability, our country would have been looted and destroyed,\u201d said Pezeshkian, vowing to \u201cnever compromise or negotiate our missile capabilities.\u201d<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Subsequently, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, declared that he will attend the funeral in Tehran of the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died in the first airstrikes of the war.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

At the start of a 60-day period to reach a permanent agreement to end the war, Iran and the United States agreed to create a “de-escalation cell” to address the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

According to the state news agency IRNA, Iran stated that the talks in Switzerland led to the creation of negotiating groups focused on the lifting of sanctions, nuclear issues, reconstruction, and supervision. The report cited Kazem Gharibabadi, the deputy foreign minister who led the talks, who stated that the countries also established a mechanism to address the transit of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

On Tuesday, Israeli soldiers opened fire in southern Lebanon and killed two people. This occurred after two days of calm following the ceasefire negotiated on Saturday. Any resumption of intense fighting could jeopardize diplomatic talks, as Iran has demanded that a total truce in Lebanon be part of any comprehensive agreement.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Israel occupies part of Lebanon and insists that it must have the ability to attack militants who launch attacks against northern Israel.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The Israeli army stated that its troops fired on four Hezbollah members traveling in an excavator and a motorcycle, who had entered a security zone without stopping despite warning shots. The Lebanese state news agency, the National News Agency, reported that the two men were killed next to an excavator that was clearing a road.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Since Sunday, there have been no recorded Israeli airstrikes or shelling, and Hezbollah has not claimed any attacks, in what has been the longest pause in fighting since the latest war between Israel and Hezbollah broke out in March.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Netanyahu raises new questions about the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Monday that his armed forces still enjoy “full freedom of action” in Lebanon to thwart any threat.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Neither Israel nor Hezbollah are signatories to the agreement between the United States and Iran. Netanyahu has vowed to keep his forces in southern Lebanon until threats against Israel are eliminated. Hezbollah has refused to cease attacks unless Israel commits to withdrawing.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

When asked about Netanyahu’s comments, Trump said: “We’ll look into it,” and added that the situation “would be resolved.”<\/p>n”\n\n“n
