The\u00a0review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)<\/strong>\u00a0will enter a\u00a0decisive<\/strong><\/a> stage<\/strong>\u00a0this coming\u00a0July 1st<\/strong>, when the\u00a0three governments<\/strong>\u00a0formally present their\u00a0position<\/strong>\u00a0on the future of the\u00a0trade agreement<\/strong>.<\/a><\/p>n”\n\n“n

However, the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard<\/strong>, assured that the most adverse scenario does not imply the disappearance of the treaty, but rather that it remains in force for at least another decade<\/strong>.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

During a meeting with the media in Mexico City<\/strong>, the official explained that the governments of Mexico, the United States, and Canada<\/strong> will submit a joint letter<\/strong> to the agreement’s review committee<\/strong>, a document that will define whether the USMCA<\/strong> extends its validity until 2036<\/strong> or if it continues under a scheme of periodic reviews<\/strong> with a 10-year<\/strong> horizon.<\/a><\/p>n”\n\n“n

USMCA review enters a key phase on July 1st<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

Ebrard<\/strong> detailed that the meeting will be held virtually<\/strong> and will include the participation of the United States Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer<\/strong>, as well as Canadian authorities<\/strong>, as established by the provisions of the treaty.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Mexico<\/strong> will attend with a clear position<\/strong>: to promote a 16-year extension<\/strong> to provide certainty for investments<\/strong> and strengthen the economic integration<\/strong> of North America<\/strong>.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

<\/a>The corresponding letter will be signed by President Claudia Sheinbaum<\/strong>, while the United States<\/strong> and Canada<\/strong> will do the same through their respective heads of government<\/strong>.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The head of the Economy Ministry emphasized that, even if one of the parties rejects the automatic extension<\/strong> of the agreement, the treaty will not disappear.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

In accordance with the mechanism provided for in Article 34.7 of the USMCA<\/strong>, there are two main scenarios: extending the validity<\/strong> for an additional 16 years<\/strong> or maintaining the agreement for 10 years<\/strong> with periodic reviews<\/strong>.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

    One of the issues that most concerns the Mexican government<\/strong> is the possibility that the United States<\/strong> will push for stricter annual reviews<\/strong>.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

    Ebrard<\/strong> pointed out that sectors such as automotive<\/strong>, steel<\/strong>, and manufacturing<\/strong> require investment processes that develop over several years, so constant evaluation without clear rules could affect business confidence<\/strong>.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

    For this reason, he raised the need to precisely define which products<\/strong> or sectors<\/strong> would be subject to review and which would be excluded.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

    The goal is to prevent companies from facing uncertainty<\/strong> regarding the commercial conditions that support their investments<\/strong> in North America<\/strong>.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

    United States maintains reservations about an automatic extension of the agreement<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

    The official acknowledged that Jamieson Greer<\/strong> has stated in various forums that the President Donald Trump<\/strong> administration is not considering an automatic 16-year<\/strong> renewal.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

    However, he stressed that the official position<\/strong> of Washington<\/strong> will not be known until July 1st<\/strong>, when the signed letters<\/strong> from the three governments are delivered.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

    In addition, he announced that a new round of talks in Mexico<\/strong> is already scheduled for the second half of July<\/strong> to continue with the negotiations.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

    Mexico seeks to preserve its trade advantage in a more protectionist environment<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

    Ebrard<\/strong> acknowledged that one of the main challenges will be negotiating with a U.S. administration that maintains a more protectionist view of international trade<\/strong>.<\/p>n”\n\n“n
