Lima<\/strong>.- Right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori achieved enough of a margin this Tuesday to win the second round of Peru’s presidential election<\/strong> and awaits the proclamation of the results that leftist Roberto S\u00e1nchez seeks to reverse, with his attempt to annul the vote abroad, by speaking without evidence of an alleged “fraud in progress<\/strong>” and anticipating that he will not recognize Fujimori’s government.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

With 99.8% of the votes counted, Fujimori has 50.11% of the valid votes compared to 49.88% for S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>, with a narrow margin between them of 42,097 votes that can no longer be reversed, as there are approximately 38,200 votes left to be counted for both contenders.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

As of Tuesday night, 191 electoral records remained to be counted, 0.20% of the total of 92,766 polling stations that were set up in the vote held on June 7, which contain on average about 200 votes for the candidates per record.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The leader of the Juntos por el Per\u00fa<\/strong> party argued for their request to annul the overseas vote, claiming that those votes were allegedly compromised.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The scrutiny percentages are reversed if the votes from abroad are subtracted, so that S\u00e1nchez achieves 50.11% of the valid votes with 40,925 more ballots than the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000), who registers 49.88%.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

S\u00e1nchez maintains that the voting abroad was “seriously<\/strong>” affected by exempting consulates from digitally submitting the voting results from abroad and instead physically sending the records to Lima to be counted, at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Foreign Minister Carlos Pareja, whom the left considers close to Fujimorism.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Likewise, the candidate who ran on behalf of the imprisoned former president Pedro Castillo (2021-2022) denounced that the transfer of the records to Lima was allegedly carried out without guarantees to prevent tampering.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

“This serious irregularity amounts to an ongoing fraud, because the voting carried out by the consular offices continues to be counted, but today we believe that the National Jury of Elections (JNE) must stop this action, as the intangibility of electoral regulations has been transgressed,” said S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

“Under those conditions of violation of the rules, we will not recognize Mrs. Fujimori’s government,” added the candidate, who called for mobilization in the streets “to defend democracy and not have five more years of the capture of democracy and institutions<\/strong>“.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

In response, the candidate for first vice president for the Fujimorist party Fuerza Popular, Luis Galarreta, stated that the leftist has shown “that he is undemocratic<\/strong>“.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

In that sense, Galarreta requested speed from the electoral authorities to announce the final vote count, considering that this delay provides space for positions like S\u00e1nchez’s, and pointed out that the leftist “is in denial<\/strong>“.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Neither S\u00e1nchez nor his party had opposed the provision regarding the physical transfer of the records from abroad to Lima when it was reported weeks before election day, nor have the international electoral observation missions determined that this change has implied a suspicion of fraud.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

For its part, the civil organization Transparencia categorically rejected the accusations of fraud without evidence and any announcement of disregarding the <\/a>official election results.<\/p>n”\n\n“n
