A 71-year-old man and a 17-year-old minor<\/strong> decided to end their lives by hanging themselves<\/strong> from the beams of their residences, in incidents that occurred in the communities of La Chorrera<\/strong>, just a few minutes from the capital city, and in Cerro Mesa<\/strong>, in the Ng\u00e4be-Bugl\u00e9 indigenous region,<\/strong> respectively.<\/a><\/p>n”\n\n“n

In Panama, every three days a citizen attempts to take their<\/strong> life<\/strong>, according to authorities, who estimate that for every death<\/strong> by suicide there are eight attempts.<\/strong><\/p>n”\n\n“n

Annually,<\/strong> between 100 to 120 suicides<\/strong> are registered in the country, according to official statistics.<\/strong><\/p>n”\n\n“n

<\/a>In the first case, the man’s body was discovered<\/strong> with a rope around his neck, hanging from the beam of his residence, by a granddaughter<\/strong> who went to bring him breakfast.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

While in the case of the minor, she was found by an aunt,<\/strong> when her life had already slipped away.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>n”\n\n“n

Social maladjustment, not having a sense of belonging, is a repetitive situation among suicide cases, authorities warn.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The young woman had had<\/strong> a heated argument<\/strong> over the phone hours earlier with her romantic partner<\/strong>, who is currently in Panama City, according to her relatives,<\/strong> as cited by the newspaper El Siglo.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

According to health authorities, suicide is the leading external cause of death in Panama<\/strong>, surpassing the number of deaths caused by traffic accidents and unintentional poisoning, a situation that has led the Public Health System to increase its attention to this phenomenon in the current century.<\/strong><\/p>n”\n\n“n

Panama approved Law 174 of November 2, 2020<\/strong>, which establishes the legal framework for addressing suicidal risk behaviors.<\/strong><\/p>n”\n\n“n

In January, the National Commission<\/strong> for the Comprehensive Approach to Suicidal Risk Behaviors<\/strong> held its first ordinary meeting, in which its 2026 Operational Plan<\/strong> was approved.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

They explained that this document synthesizes the commitment acquired<\/strong> through the aforementioned law, which is the legal instrument that declares the prevention of suicidal risk behaviors to be of national interest.<\/strong> A psychologist listens attentively to a patient who shows signs of distress and worry during a therapy session. The 16 commissions that make up the National Commission<\/strong> for the Comprehensive Approach to Suicidal Risk Behaviors are working on the dissemination of the<\/strong> Prevention Guide<\/strong> for Suicidal Risk Behavior in work environments, which represents a historical debt<\/strong> to thousands of workers and employees in the country.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The most recent official statistics<\/strong> reveal that in 2023<\/strong>, 118 deaths by intentionally self-inflicted injuries<\/strong> were reported in the country, of which 105<\/strong> were men<\/strong> and 13 women.<\/strong><\/p>n”\n\n“n

During that period, the ages of those who decided to take their own lives<\/strong> were between 10 and 24 years old<\/strong>, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Census.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Both the Ministry of Health and the Social Security Fund<\/strong> reported that they will adopt the Standard for the Surveillance System<\/strong> of Suicidal Risk Behavior, which was approved through Resolution No. 99 of February 11, 2026.<\/strong><\/p>n”\n\n“n

With the application of this document, they stated that suicidal risk behavior is recognized as an epidemiological event<\/strong> of public health importance in Panama and is subject to mandatory notification.<\/strong><\/p>n”\n\n“n

The Ministry of Health stated that it will adopt the Standard for the Suicidal Risk Behavior Surveillance System. <\/p>n”\n\n“n

Its introduction states that the system’s purpose is to continuously and systematically identify, register, monitor, and analyze<\/strong> events related to suicidal risk behavior<\/strong>, including cases of suicide attempts<\/strong> and completed suicides.<\/strong><\/p>n”\n\n“n

Regarding the various factors<\/strong> that can cause a person<\/strong> to attempt to take their own life<\/strong>, the Ministry of Health maintains that economic problems, family disintegration, and chronic degenerative diseases<\/strong> are not among the main causes.<\/strong><\/p>n”\n\n“n
