Rio de Janeiro.-<\/strong> <\/strong>The Brazilian Foreign Ministry<\/a> stated this Wednesday in a social media post that “traitors to the homeland will not be able to rewrite history,” in reference to the intention of the opposition presidential candidate, Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro, to attend a hearing in the U.S. to supposedly defend Brazil’s interests.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not expressly mention in its unusual publication the name of the opposition senator, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, but it makes it clear that it is a response to the senator’s announcement that he will try to defend Brazil’s interests before the US since the foreign ministry supposedly does not do so.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u00abTraitors to the homeland will not succeed in rewriting history. Brazil knows that the additional tariffs (imposed by the United States on Brazilian products) have their origin in an attempt at external interference in the Brazilian justice system\u00bb, stated the Foreign Ministry on its social media.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

On Tuesday, also on social media, Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro stated that he requested authorization to participate in a public hearing before the U.S. Government in which the 25% additional tariff with which the Donald Trump administration threatens to sanction Brazilian exports for alleged unfair trade practices will be discussed.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Bolsonaro, pointed out by polls as the main rival of Brazil’s president, Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva, in next October’s elections, said he will attend the hearing convened by the Office of the United States Trade Representative to express his opposition to the sanction and defend Brazilian businessmen.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The tariff tension between Lula and Bolsonaro<\/h3>n”\n\n“n

Lula’s government blames the Bolsonaro family for the 50% additional tariff that the United States government imposed last year on a large portion of Brazilian exports, but which has already been lifted.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

According to the progressive leader, such a sanction was a response to requests from the former president’s family for Trump to sanction Brazilian authorities in an attempt to prevent the trial in which Jair Bolsonaro received a 27-year prison sentence for coup-mongering.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The American president himself attributed the sanction to the alleged political persecution suffered by the leader of the Brazilian far-right, who is also his ally.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

“What the traitors of the homeland owe Brazil is an apology for the tariffs and for the damages caused to thousands of Brazilians,” the Brazilian Foreign Ministry responded in its publication this Wednesday.<\/p>n”\n\n“n
