Panama City.- <\/strong>The General Assembly of the Organization of American States <\/a>(OAS) reiterated this Wednesday in a joint declaration the need for Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations on the sovereignty dispute of the Malvinas Islands, and congratulated the Argentine government for continuing to explore avenues to find a peaceful solution.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The declaration on the \u2018Question of the Malvinas Islands\u2019 was approved during the fourth plenary session of the 56th OAS General Assembly being held in Panama.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

“Reaffirms the need for the Governments of the Argentine Republic and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to resume, as soon as possible, negotiations on the sovereignty dispute, with the aim of finding a peaceful solution to this prolonged controversy,” the statement indicates.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

During the session on the Malvinas, Argentina’s Undersecretary of Foreign Policy, Juan Manuel Navarro, stated that his “country reaffirms its commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes, to effective multilateralism, and to a rules-based international order”.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

“For that reason, he urges the United Kingdom to make the same commitment and to fulfill its obligations regarding decolonization,” Navarro stressed.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The situation between Argentina and the United Kingdom regarding the Malvinas<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

In the document, the OAS’s highest political body recalled that the Malvinas issue constitutes a matter of permanent hemispheric interest and reaffirmed the resolutions adopted since 1988 that urge both countries to resume dialogue.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

During the debate, Michael Kozak, a senior official at the U.S. Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, reaffirmed to the Assembly his country’s stance of “neutrality” regarding the sovereignty dispute, although he acknowledged that the “United Kingdom is exercising de facto administration of these islands.”<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The Assembly expressed its satisfaction with the willingness shown by the Argentine Government to continue exploring all possible avenues to reach a peaceful solution to the controversy and for its constructive attitude towards the inhabitants of the islands.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

“The sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas, South Georgia, and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime spaces is an unresolved issue and must be settled peacefully,” stated OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin, affirming that “this is a decolonization issue that remains pending in our hemisphere.”<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The General Assembly further decided to continue examining the Question of the Malvinas Islands in its future sessions until a definitive solution is reached.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Negotiations on hold<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

Since British forces occupied the Malvinas Islands in 1833 and evicted their inhabitants and the Argentine authorities, the South American country has never ceased to claim its sovereign rights over this archipelago in the South Atlantic, the scene of a war that in 1982 ended with the Argentine surrender to British forces.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Following Argentina’s return to democracy in 1983, the South American country has incessantly claimed its sovereignty over the islands in all types of international forums, while the UN General Assembly and the Special Committee on Decolonization have reiterated the call for negotiations dozens of times, without London agreeing to it.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Throughout these years, Argentina has managed to get the Organization of American States, the G77 plus China, and many other multilateral and regional forums to support its claim, but the United States has always backed the British position.<\/p>n”\n\n“n
