Santiago.<\/strong>– The defense for Luisa Yasiris Guzm\u00e1n, president of the T\u00f3cate RD\u2013Casa<\/a> de Acogida Foundation and wife of the former director of the Patronato de Lucha Contra el C\u00e1ncer, H\u00e9ctor Lora Cruceta, maintained this Thursday that the Public Ministry intends to establish guilt without having concluded the investigation into the case known as Operation Onco14.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Lawyer Pantale\u00f3n Mieses asserted that audits, witness interviews, and other investigative procedures are still pending, which, in his view, are essential to clarify the facts before imposing a measure as burdensome as 18 months of pretrial detention.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The jurist stated that his client showed a willingness to collaborate with the authorities from the beginning of the investigations. He indicated that in March he requested a meeting with the Attorney General of the Republic, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, to offer explanations regarding her participation, but, as he said, she was never received. He added that he also sent a communication to the chief prosecutor of Santiago, Yenny Berenice Abreu, requesting to be interviewed following a journalistic report on the Regional Oncological Institute, with the purpose of demonstrating that she had no connection to the irregularities being investigated.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Mieses explained that Luisa Guzm\u00e1n managed a shelter for cancer patients from remote communities, who received free accommodation while being treated in Santiago. He specified that this work was financed with resources obtained through activities and institutional contributions, as is the case with other non-profit organizations.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Likewise, he described the request for pretrial detention against his client as disproportionate, comparing it to the variation of the measure requested by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in favor of the also accused Dilcia Isabel Vargas S\u00e1nchez, who, as he indicated, had reached a cooperation agreement with the prosecuting body and could be granted house arrest.<\/p>n”\n\n“n
