The Government of Honduras<\/strong> clarified this Thursday that it is not holding conversations<\/a> or official negotiations with Taiwan<\/strong> to reestablish diplomatic relations, after reports circulated regarding a possible rapprochement between both parties.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

<\/a>Through an official statement, the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation<\/strong> indicated that the information disseminated does not correspond to the official position of the Honduran State and reiterated that foreign policy is developed through established institutional channels.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u201cThe Foreign Ministry clarifies that Honduras is not holding conversations or official negotiations with authorities from Taiwan to re-establish diplomatic relations,\u201d<\/strong> indicated the institution.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

<\/a>The statement comes amid speculation about a possible rapprochement with Taiwan, three years after Honduras decided to break diplomatic relations with the island and establish official ties with the People’s Republic of China.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Ministry of Foreign Affairs ratifies foreign policy<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that all diplomatic actions are carried out in accordance with official procedures and current international commitments.<\/a><\/p>n”\n\n“n

The institution emphasized that the country’s foreign policy is conducted exclusively through the competent State bodies and in adherence to the diplomatic agreements assumed by Honduras.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

\u201cForeign policy actions will continue to be carried out in accordance with official procedures and existing diplomatic commitments,\u201d<\/strong> added the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Honduran authorities did not provide further details regarding the origin of the versions that suggested possible conversations with Taiwan. The Foreign Ministry ruled out any efforts to re-establish relations with the island.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

China reiterates the \u201cone-China\u201d principle<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

In parallel, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Honduras issued a statement in which it reiterated the validity of the “one China”<\/strong> principle.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The diplomatic representation recalled that there is only one Chinese State and maintained that Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Likewise, it pointed out that the Government of the People’s Republic of China<\/strong> is the only legitimate representative of China before the international community.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The embassy highlighted that China currently maintains diplomatic relations with 183 countries<\/strong>, including Honduras, ties that were formally established in March 2023.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Relations between Honduras and China<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

Honduras severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan on March 26, 2023, ending more than eight decades of official ties between both governments.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

That same day, Tegucigalpa established diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, a decision that generated broad political and economic debate in the country.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Since then, both governments have signed cooperation agreements in areas such as infrastructure, trade, agriculture, technology, and education.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Honduran authorities have indicated that the relationship with China seeks to expand investment opportunities and strengthen bilateral cooperation. The relationship between Honduras and China remains in effect, according to the authorities.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

UN Reference<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

The Chinese Embassy also recalled United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758<\/strong>, adopted in 1971, through which the UN recognized the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate representative of China.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

According to the diplomatic mission, said resolution remains fully legally valid and constitutes the basis for the international recognition of the one-China principle.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Furthermore, he maintained that in official United Nations documents, Taiwan is listed as \u201cTaiwan, Province of China\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>n”\n\n“n

Geopolitical debate<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

The subject of diplomatic relations between Honduras, China, and Taiwan continues to be a matter of political debate both nationally and internationally.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Political sectors have questioned the break with Taiwan, while others support the rapprochement with China, arguing for economic and commercial benefits.<\/p>n”\n\n“n
