Santo Domingo.<\/strong>– The Vida Sin Violencia Foundation warned this Wednesday about a 74% increase in intimate femicides<\/strong> recorded during the first half of 2026, counting 47 women murdered by their partners or ex-partners<\/strong>, a figure higher than the 27 cases documented in the same period of 2025.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

During a press conference, the president of the organization, Yanira Fondeur<\/strong>, reported that these events left 68 children and adolescents orphaned<\/strong>, for which she urged the Government to guarantee them comprehensive protection and to reinforce public policies aimed at preventing gender-based violence.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

“We are not appearing to compete with official figures or to point fingers at those responsible. We wish to make a national tragedy visible and propose concrete solutions. Every woman had a life that could have been saved, a story of suffering, and devastated families,” stated Fondeur.<\/p>n<\/blockquote>n”\n\n“n

The activist indicated that 38 of the victims were murdered in their own homes<\/strong> and that 33 were under 35 years of age<\/strong>. Furthermore, she specified that three were minors<\/strong>, three were pregnant<\/strong>, and three were of Haitian nationality<\/strong>. She also pointed out that the aggressors include two police officers and two military personnel<\/strong>.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

According to the data presented by the foundation, the provinces with the highest incidence were Santo Domingo, with 13 cases; the National District, with seven, and La Altagracia, with five. Likewise, May was identified as the month with the highest number of femicides during the semester.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Fondeur added that 11 of the attackers committed suicide after committing the crimes, while 19 used firearms and another 19 used bladed weapons. In other cases, the victims died from blows or burns.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

The president of the entity also reported that, from 2020 to date, the organization has documented 511 intimate femicides, with an average of 79 murders of women per year, leaving 473 minors orphaned.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

“Every four days a woman is murdered by someone who claimed to love her and we are not talking about cold statistics,” she stated.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Eight proposals to reduce femicides<\/h2>n”\n\n“n

Although it valued the initiatives announced by the Ministry of Women to strengthen awareness and expand preventive campaigns, the Foundation considered that the increase in femicides requires higher-impact actions.<\/p>n”\n\n“n

Among the proposed measures are:<\/p>n”\n\n“n

  • Implement immediate mechanisms that guarantee the protection of women who report violence.<\/li>nnnn
  • Include subjects on equal rights, values, and peaceful conflict resolution in the school curriculum.<\/li>nnnn
  • Update the legal framework on violence against women, considering that Law 24-97 requires adjustments after nearly three decades in effect.<\/li>nnnn
  • Develop national campaigns to promote a masculinity based on respect, empathy, and co-responsibility.<\/li>nnnn
  • Establish mandatory gender-based violence training programs for police and military personnel.<\/li>nnnn
  • Create Care Centers for Survivors of Violence and Behavioral Intervention Centers aimed at male aggressors.<\/li>nnnn
  • Implement a National Registry of Orphans of Femicide that guarantees psychological, economic, and legal support.<\/li>nnnn
  • Constitute a National Roundtable for the Prevention of Femicide integrated by institutions linked to the protection system, with periodic meetings and verifiable goals.<\/li>n<\/ul>n”\n\n“n

    Fondeur recalled that the Vida Sin Violencia Foundation has been working for 17 years<\/strong> on the prevention of domestic and gender-based violence, promoting education as a fundamental tool to transform the sexist culture and foster a culture of peace.<\/p>n”\n\n“n
