M\u00e9lido Mercedes sees no reason for a new round of dialogues<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santo Domingo.\u2013 <\/em><\/strong>With less than a month left before the current legislative session concludes, the president of the Permanent Labor Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, <\/em><\/strong>M\u00e9lido Mercedes, stated that there is no will to approve the reform of the Labor Code<\/a>, while questioning the possibility of reopening a new round of dialogue between employers and workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legislator maintained that, although the commission continues to meet regularly every Thursday, the project has remained stalled since it was returned to committee about two weeks ago with the purpose of awaiting an eventual resumption of dialogue between the involved sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat we are observing is that there is no will for the labor reform to be approved. That is the reality,\u201d stated Mercedes when approached by the press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deputy expressed surprise because, despite the time that has passed since the initiative returned to committee, a meeting between representatives of the business sector and workers to present new proposals to Congress has still not taken place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his view, insisting on a new round of talks is pointless because positions on unemployment have remained unchanged for more than a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBusiness owners want severance pay to be eliminated, and workers want it to be maintained. If they have been in dialogue for 13 years without reaching an agreement, what are they going to discuss now?\u201d, he questioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercedes insisted that Congress must assume its responsibility and review the project without continuing to prolong the debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are going to get to know this reform, which is what the Dominican people want,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>he\/she expressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regarding the possibility that the initiative expires at the end of the legislative term, the president of the Labor Commission said he agrees with the position of union leader Rafael (Pepe) Abreu, who has proposed that, if it is not approved within the established time, the bill should not be reintroduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt would be the logical thing, for the Code to remain exactly as it is,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mercedes’ statements come after the Chamber of Deputies decided to send the labor reform bill back to committee once again to introduce additional adjustments to several articles, a decision that prolongs the discussion of the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, assured that the pending modifications are not related to severance pay, a topic that, as he stated, has already been defined by the legislators, so the changes are focused on other aspects of the bill.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
