Santo Domingo<\/strong>.\u2013 The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) reported that intense heat will persist over the next few days in much of the country, especially in the northwest, north, and southwest regions, where maximum temperatures could reach between 35 \u00b0C and 39 \u00b0C, with a higher heat index due to high humidity levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency explained that these conditions are associated with summer, a time of year characterized by greater solar radiation; the incidence of a high-pressure system that favors the entry of warm winds from the east\/southeast; and the presence of low to moderate concentrations of Saharan dust over the national territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, he indicated that the influence of the El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon is added to these factors, which currently presents a moderate intensity and favors a pattern of scarce rainfall and temperatures above normal values in the Caribbean region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indomet pointed out that, according to projections from the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) model of the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this pattern will persist over the next two weeks. It also recalled that July and August are, climatologically, the hottest months of the year in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institution noted that June 2026 was marked by very high temperatures in different locations across the country. The highest value was recorded on June 29 in Sabaneta, Santiago Rodr\u00edguez province, where the temperature reached 39.9 \u00b0C, setting a new historical record for that weather station. This value surpassed the 38.5 \u00b0C recorded in 1964, a mark that remained in effect for 62 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maximum temperatures of 38.4 \u00b0C were also recorded in Mao, Valverde province; 38.2 \u00b0C in Jiman\u00ed, Independencia; 37.1 \u00b0C in Dajab\u00f3n; 37.0 \u00b0C in Altamira, Puerto Plata; and 36.4 \u00b0C in Santiago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New records were also set in Santo Domingo. The Santo Domingo East station reached 36.6 \u00b0C on June 30, surpassing the previous record of 36.0 \u00b0C, set in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, the Las Am\u00e9ricas weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 35.9 \u00b0C, surpassing the previous record of 35.5 \u00b0C, corresponding to the year 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recommendations for the population<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the persistence of high temperatures, Indomet recommends that citizens stay well hydrated, wear light-colored, lightweight clothing, apply sunscreen, and avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institution also urged to pay special attention to children, older adults, and people with health conditions, as they constitute the most vulnerable groups to the effects of extreme heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
