A man set himself on fire in front of the United Nations<\/strong> headquarters in New York<\/strong> this Thursday and died from his injuries, police reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US media and a pro-Tibetan activist said the individual was an advocate for the Tibetan cause, although investigators have not confirmed such a claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York Police Department (NYPD)<\/strong> stated that at 10:32 PM GMT they received a call alerting that “a man set himself on fire at First Avenue and 42nd Street.” “He was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital<\/strong>. The investigation is ongoing,” they added. At the moment, authorities have not reported a motive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/strong>, said in a statement that “we are appalled by this tragic and terrible incident and express our condolences to his family”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tencho Gyatso<\/strong>, president of the International Campaign for Tibet, said that the man’s name was Lobga Rangzen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“He was a tireless advocate for Tibet who dedicated himself to peacefully raising awareness about the human rights crisis,” said Gyatso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that Rangzen opposed China’s new “law to promote ethnic unity and progress,” which Beijing has said seeks to forge a “shared” national identity among different ethnic groups.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
