The Houthi rebels of Yemen<\/strong> threatened this Friday to attack airports and strategic infrastructure in Saudi Arabia<\/strong> after reporting that Saudi fighter jets violated their airspace to prevent the landing of an Iranian civilian plane in the capital, Sanaa, which was carrying more than 200 stranded, wounded, and sick citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Saree<\/strong>, warned in a video message: \u201cWe warn the criminal Saudi enemy against any new attempt to violate our airspace or commit aggression against our country.\u201d He added that \u201cany such action will receive a comprehensive response directed against its airports and its vital interests, both on land and at sea.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Saree, the incident occurred at 05:20 local time (02:20 GMT), when a formation of Saudi fighter jets penetrated Yemeni airspace. Houthi forces responded with air defense missiles and, according to the spokesperson, managed to force the fighters to retreat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>The Iranian aircraft, operated by the company Mahan Air<\/strong>, finally landed at Sana’a International Airport. The flight was also transporting a delegation from the Houthi movement bound for Tehran to participate in the funeral rites of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to the Houthi television channel Al Masirah. Saudi Arabia had not publicly reacted to the threats as of the time of this report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commercial flights to and from Sana’a airport have remained virtually suspended since 2015, when the Saudi-led military coalition imposed restrictions on Yemeni airspace. Riyadh has repeatedly argued that these measures are necessary to prevent the supply of weapons to the rebels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Service resumed partially in 2022, although limited to a small number of destinations. Saree demanded \u201cthe need to end the blockade\u201d<\/strong> and announced that flights between Sana’a and Tehran will continue \u201cregardless of what the results and repercussions may be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Houthis took up arms in 2014 against the internationally recognized Yemeni government, backed by the Saudi coalition, and have since controlled the capital and much of the north and west of the country. Government authorities are based in Aden, in the south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conflict has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis. The fighting decreased in intensity following the truce negotiated by the United Nations (UN)<\/strong> in 2022, although the scenario has become more complex with Israeli attacks against Houthi positions, insurgent attacks against international shipping, the armed response from the United States, and clashes with separatists from the Southern Transitional Council (STC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
